Full Moon In The Rear-View Mirror

Life is round
turns on a dime
Wheel chases the white line
until it runs blood cold
And then you know
Life as you knew it
is a detour off of red
and only headlights follow
Reminders of what's learned
along the road

Life is round
curves off a straight line
Enter the race
The taste of paradise
still in your mouth
that no earthly thing
can fill
You hear the hollow sound
of a radio station that slips
out-of-range
Exit at the next right

Life is round
within square borders
Sharp corners on a caution sign
you choose to ignore
Folded corners on a dollar bill
spit out of a soft-drink machine
Windshield wipers stuck
in mid-arc
Full moon in the rear-view mirror
beckons you back
to a place
you can no longer go

These are brilliant lines. I love the references to all that is circular; it feels very karmic to me. The metaphysical flavor here is irresistible.

Nothing can replace our youth and uncertainty except for maturity and acceptance. and that's not allways fun, but it's life, and that's all we have now.

Enjoyed this, Pierre

Linda, kind of reminds me of a trip I took once, or perhaps
I'm still taking. Metaphorically speaking, wow! -gene.

Linda,
The images are delivered so directly without any ornamentation and are so appropriate for journey as metaphor; the opening of the final stanza reminds me of Donne's 'at the round earth's imagined corners' and indeed the whole poem has much of the metaphysical in it.

this does great things with my mind, Linda. I love the forward-backwards play of images, plus the juxtaposed square with the round, lines with curves, white with red. Especially like the lines:

The taste of paradise
still in your mouth
that no earthly thing
can fill

... and great resolution in conclusion. Very strong writing and just the sort of metaphysical musing that takes place on these long-distance, mid-night country roads! Love it, thank you. Kate xx
