Garrison Creek mourns
memories of bare feet slicing time
swinging on a hemp rope
worn smooth by childhood
then falling
falling into cool laughter
The tree’s gnarled trunk’s twisted veins
swelling in the heat groaned
beside our weightless joy
We feasted on wild blackberries,
staining our lips for a pubescent kiss
While my brothers built a fire boiling water
for craw-daddies under the bridge
and swilled pirated beer against
mid-day’s sweat
Their old Lucky Lager beer cans
are buried under the mud, as well as
RC Cola and Nesbitt Orange bottles
sipped during late night summer trysts
remembered in my sister’s key-locked diaries
Secrets of her round script are lost
in stars that hold them
Along with the innocence within the lofty loops
that left so much space for romance closed
in life’s unfolding
She fought until death against matter
that pressed her between the pages
Sighed one final breath at the close of summer
Before floating down the creek
on an overjoyed inner-tube, free

This is so beautiful! It made me cry, and remember good times past, growing and learning and loved ones lost. Fond Memories are one of the joys of life.

Take Care,
Pierre

Totally fabulous... I can only gaze whistfully on. This is my kinda Katy-did. Really taken with your sister's secret notebook... and even perhaps a little saddened by a more sinister edge to the finale, if not deeply tragic... I hope I'm wrong. But I pick this up in your choice of words in the first line, too. If not, this is doubly potent and poignant. Whatever, Linda, this is classy writing. Rich and wondrous for certain sure. xx

I love nostalgic writes, and this is a grand one; and I really miss those 'good old days.'

Wonderfully written, Lin. Though in a different place at a different time, I remember backyard "kick the can" and "higher than the ground" and "it". I remember hidden childhood kisses and the first touch of a girl's breast in the basement.
Thank's for the memories, Lin.
Mark.

Wonderfully sad, a tragedy in those childhood days. Gripped me like the shock of the first dip in spring waters.

Wiping teardrops from the corner of my eyes, this one triggered a floodgate of my own childhood memories to play before me. Yes I remember those days at the lake, and Nesbit Orange pop, and the first flirting and kissing of girls when a few mouthfuls of any kind of alcohol would automatically make us drunk but me thinks we were more drunk on youth and life. Thank you for the shared memories...

Old times are better than new times, because now the sadness are enhanced everyday by everyday tragedies and hardship while old times memories have innocence and always happy endings...

What a gift you have. Gene is right on the button! The photo brings back a memory at my grandpa's cabin. What fun. Never drank Lucky out of a can but I remember the 11.5oz bottles and the puzzle under the cap. Follow Gene's advice this is really good. Patrick
