Towers crumble, ideologies fail
Souls contract, shut out the light--wail
and cling to what is gone--what they believe
is right, even as they bleed from the thin,
sharp-edged pain of reality’s blade
The world cracks and we bandage the wound,
tourniquet wound tighter as life resumes
Step in time with the ticking clock that counts
down beats as stick to cymbal, fingers to strings
Oh that sound forever echoing, echoing in the ear
Block out the ring with busy hands, busy minds
and the balm of laughter or good time
Escape, escape the impermanence of everything
but the soul’s crying as we scribe the day’s dying
recorded on stone, papyrus, parchment, bytes
Dusted tomes forgotten in haste
and mechanisms left to rust in greed’s decay
As the power of the dead lay still, their skill
is used to further the climb
No life is in vain but fodder for another’s gain
Or enlightenment born of another’s pain
Oh the stain--eons of knowing carried in the blood
and written from fingers dipped in flood of ink
The hermit’s lantern, a pale light in the wilderness
lacking shine, so his wisdom is ignored on the vine
Oh the waste of precious fruit that drops
without a sound on the welcoming ground
Fresh food for thought that in another age
will be regarded as rare bounty from the grave

The slow rhythm of this poem invites the reader to adopt a quiet and meditative state of mind and enter the cyclical nature of life that gives meaning to its linear aspects. Nothing, no life, no effort is vain in that respect.

There are many beautiful lines in this piece and one of my favorites for both form and content is:
"As the power of the dead lay still, their skill
is used to further the climb"

Elegant, moving writing that rings out strong and sharp when read aloud. This is one of my new all-time Den favorites. I particularly love:
"The hermit’s lantern, a pale light in the wilderness
lacking shine, so his wisdom is ignored on the vine..."
With respect and admiration ~

I'm so impressed with the depth and scope of this poem, Linda. Very Ecclesiastes, somehow. It has weight and is sonorous. A significant write. This needs to be read and digested and pondered upon with due care and attention. Thank you for your major effort here. Kate xx

Linda,
Deeply and wonderfully thought through, a delve and excavation of us and what we really are.

This is amaxingly written and so it hits hard to me at home. It makes me think of this generation and its faults and the killings and mobbings and what destruction is being caused by careless and uncaring people who live in this world today.

In the path of this unlocking vault we see
These depths of your beautiful soul expressing in this exquisite walk in the dark
And this lantern just mesmerizes this reader!! I love the atmosphere of this poem, and the emotions you vividly express of loss & eternality...

A few men, conscious men, wise ones, have tried for eons to left a record of man's triumphs and man's lunacy framed in the world of "then" which aren't different of ours today. We have only advanced on the evolution scale of cruelty.

I'm sure you have heard the sayings " the pen is mightier than the sword" and " words Lie still" I have to ask myself after reading this Who authored those sayings? they are very contradictory and how many more sayings that we have learned are in us and furthermore, what effect do they have on who we are. Writing is both sad and glorious, I especially like the last verse. This has been true for so many things that have been written up till now. We that truly care need to change that.

Great write,

Take Care, Pierre
