Homeless

by Henry Burt Stevens 3/15/2003

Years, years of road

thought I’d found it many times

still walking, looking

Lost most my strength

but got my tent

got my freedom

no bosses dissing me

no family pissing me

Sure, They say I’ve

made bad choices

They didn’t want to

help me then, still don’t

I’m cold I ache

but still I’m walking

God, I could use a

shower and some

one to talk to

I have been to a homeless church and it is a beautiful service. The folks are wonderful, sincere, and they care about others. Helping eachother we can create a better world.

God bless the homeless!

Very nice job, Henry. I've read it several times and don't see a word about handouts. Funny how we all get something different from a piece. I like the way you show that last bit of pride that many street people seem to carry - those "this is my choice" lines so they can keep their heads up. For some, like what Jerry describes below, it's a choice to be lazy for a time, not true desparation, and this might be a good experience if the person learns from it, or bad if the person comes back assuming that all the others truly had the same opportunity and thumbed their noses at their talents. For most, that's not true. There are many out there in true desparation, holding to a facade of choice, not the other way around.

As a poet you have spoken. Your voice is heard. There is a sad and poignant message in this.

truly sad and heartbreaking..no, at times, it IS through no fault of their own that they end up homeless, but people need to realize that they are people too, and they need help...LOTS of help!! they also need to help our vets and the disabled!!

powerful poem; well done!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in tx., karen lynn. :( >tears <

Aw, I know what it is like out there. I have been there far too many times during my life. Nobody put me there. Nobody made me stay there. And nobody pulled me off the road, I did it myself and that is what everybody else can do too if they really want to. Hell with a handout. This is not meant to include the truly mentally ill who realy do not have a chance.

Truly a sad commentary on today's world - and even sadder, many of these homeless folks today are Armed Forces Veterans - who no one wanted to help.
