Pretend
by Henry Burt Stevens
04/17/2005
www.authorsden.com/henrybstevens

when child i
often played
pretend with
other kids

now old
i'll no
longer play
child's play

voice,writing
i'll spend
recklessly hurriedly
to oppose pretend

like crossing
quicksand or bog
the excitment
of reaching

the other side
will entertain
my days
till swallowed up.

The wild and rocky, unknown shores of "Pretend" ceaselessly have an appeal... but sometimes, as life progresses, whether it is just time-pressure, stress or the need for anchor, it seems to me that we are more ready to just hurry across the street and to shut our door on the world in order to feel safe and secure. Sometimes we lose interest in "the journey" and just have a need to "get there!"... Neat write, Henry. TY Kate x
