Second Skin is the second of eight poems that were written over many years, starting in the depths of the most distressing period of my life and reaching – gradually, finally – new understanding. I didn’t plan the individual poems as a coherent collection and didn’t realize the story they told until I recently read through a number of older poems. Those poems felt like preludes to newer ones, revealing, in concert, what was really going on inside me. Though much occurred in my life before the first poem took shape, and though I am still very much alive, I call this collection: Lifecycle. At very least, it traverses the circular path of one of the most significant cycles in my life so far.
A new poem will be added for each of the next six weeks;
A previous poem in Lifecycle is: Half-Alive.

Second Skin
The young man had looked around
And wove out of what he admired
A coat of many colors.
Later he’d added bangles
And they sparkled and shone
Like the coats of many others.
As the coat grew heavy,
Laden down with decorations,
He stumbled and fell
And could not rise
Until the sun blazed hot
On costume jewelry
And turned it to dust.
An older man rose,
Heavy with forgotten feelings
Yet lightened in a different way.
He could breathe again
And face two mirrors
One of the world,
One of the heart.
Eyes opened, he saw
His real coat, himself,
Unlike any others.

| Charles, in this life, it takes time to find the real "you" but it appears from this fine writing that you are finding yourself. When we are young we don't know exactly what we are looking for, we make errors that is sometimes hard to correct. A very nice writing. |

It's been said many times, Charles...to thine own self be true..
and none said any better than your fine poem's concluding stanza.
