To My Several Selves
In quiet moments,
I can hear them whispering
And, often arguing
When decisions near:
The three sides of me.
Dreamer, Fretter, Doer.
Dreams gift inspiration
But imagining alone leads nowhere.
Fretting reminds you of consequences
But has the traction of a mud hole.
Doing gets results
But flattens things in its way.
(I, personally, cringe at the memory
Of feelings I’ve trampled.)
Our most common advice
Counsels the primacy of one,
Not the strength of combination.
Think before you act!
Don’t worry so much!
Get going, just do it!
To which a fractured world
Sends back its retort:
For your sake
And for the sake of others
Cherish all your sides
Consult them generously,
And listen, especially,
To the quietest among them.
