Strictly my impressions today from remembering this date in history, when Hitler invaded Poland. It's so quiet out today...

September 1

Gossiping cicadas harp at the waning sun,
Blind to the sinister pregnancy of winter
As the smoke from a final summer barbecue
Drifts lazily over the gently baking suburbs…

Mindless of a slithering scar on the calendar
Recalling wolves prowling on a European chessboard
(Having long since checked the kings in twisted crosses)
Licking their chops, to savor a most juicy kielbasa…

When British bowlers, in righteous indignation
Stowed their crumpets and hunkered to the chase
As the smoke from a long summer barbecue
Drifted lazily over a fear-baked continent…

While gossiping cowboys curled a weathered lip
Blind to the insidious pregnancy of winter,
As two oceans nuzzled their cozy contempt
Of a stooped and bloody European chessboard…

Now bowlers and cowboys stumble and stagger
Around an ancient, whirling chessboard
(Having long since lost the kings to twisted crescents)
Racing to kill some sharp-toothed cubs before a final winter.

Very potent, Melissa. I am far from being politically-minded but somehow, through your sharp visuals, the politics of war are brought abundantly before the mind's eye and into sharp focus so as to be highly penetrating. Your final stanza is superb... Could be a lavish oil painting that one would need to stand before for hours in order to absorb its scope and content. Excellent, thank you. Kate xx

Melissa,

Don't know if mankind will ever learn. Those that forget the past are condemned to repeat it, is what the message in this poignant write tells me. Sad, yet very well penned.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Melissa, maybe when the last man or woman is standing we will have gotten the message! Your message is clear and short, although with all these beautiful metaphors, it expands a whole universe of meaning in wonderful poetic form. Yours! Jasmin Horst

This is indeed one of your best poems and love the imagery within it. And could easily be the beginning of a great book.

One, if not the, best piece of poetry writing I have seen coming from you, Missy. YOu have so many metaphors alive and screaming within the structure of the piece I can almost hear them . . . Your words touched this old guy today . . . Thank you for that . . .

I truly enjoyed your work here. It amazes me how history continues to repeat itself. One has to wonder, especially whennit is at such a high cost. A great write!

Smiles,
Dorothy
