In Recognition of those people that provide jobs and an example for us all.

Small Business Lament

Up at sunrise each morning.

New problems every day.

Seems to be always working

But not for just a pay.

Seldom sees any money

It comes in and then goes out.

Not the land of milk and honey

Most days are filled with doubt

The dreams of youth have vanished

Enthusiasm hard to find

Out look on life now tarnished

So many worries on the mind.

What get’s them up each morning ?

What keeps them going strong ?

Why do they keep enjoying

Such hard work all day long ?

You see they do it for the others

They think they couldn’t get along.

They are like sisters and brothers.

The people in this song.

Family that they care for

Employees just as close

Customers that demand more

And have to count the most.

They are the glue in the mix

The stock in the soup

Problems they always fix

And they always lead the group.

They are business people

And seldom are admired

Their buildings have no steeple

But thank God they are inspired.

We (my husband and I) have been there. Now our business has grown (and matured) so that we enjoy more monetary rewards and don't have to get up early (most of the time). Since we are mid-fifties, that may be a good thing. But we have been tested during this economic season--and find that we are willing to get back into the sacrafical mode of things if that is necessary. The primary reason? I want to say it is for the benefit of our awesome employees who are in many respects our family--but equally as important (in this selfish heart) is that most of our retirement is wrapped up in our business--along with the dreams of our youth, accomplishments, and successes. We will do what we must to see our business through hard times. Your poem is a welcome refreshment. Thank you.

An ode to all who spend long hours, give up holidays and many times, quality time with families to fulfill a dream of a better future for all, perseverence and prayer....

Be always safe,
