Touchstone

I am sad when I think of unfulfilled years
With no you, Sister of mine.
What have we missed,
Lost to us forever?
How many unshed tears have fallen,
How much laughter we could have
Remembered?
How much joy lost,
What will be the cost,
The totality of such lonely dreams,
So many nights spent alone,
Of spirit searching for spirit
Unable to reach
The touchstone of your heart.
Was it God Who decided for us?
If so, all is well,
For His purpose is always true .
Never-the-less, I am sad
When I think of unfulfilled years
With no you, Sister of mine.
Dreams have no substance
We can hold in our hands,
And joy is a transient thing,
Tossed on the winds of
And effervescent fate,
Welling from an invisible spring.
And, if at this late time in my life
I am to find myself no longer alone,
Spirit will touch spirit,
Dreams will become substantial things,
And springs will grow
And flow into rivers of love that
Reach from me to you.
But when I think of unfulfilled years
With no you, Sister of mine,
I am sad.

For my sister, Cheryl Ann, who I saw for the first time since 1959 in November 2001.
