The day grows thin and sunlight wanes
Sparkling on water laying on sidewalks
The long winter of ice and cold is warming
Water in a hundred miniature rivlets
Trickles toward a larger stream
Taking with it a dozen cold memories
Snow piles are ragged and grimy
Clumped beside the streets by plows
And salted into dirty crystalline peaks
The winter is melting into spring
The dogs taking owners for walks prance
Cheered by this small bit of warm reprieve
After months of dark days and steamed breath
coats no longer are zipped against the wind
instead fly back freed by a warm breeze
but this is March, that came in as a lamb
and has a reputation to uphold
It must not submit to April easily.
instead it must roar out like a jungle cat
so the humans wait, anticipating trouble
knowing that time will conquer this season
yes even this time of frozen gloom
will end very , very soon.
