image by mec: exploring the eastern sierras.....
But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Most High has not done this?” Job12:7-9
|
Across the lake, crystal peak jutted up from the craggy spine like a thumb. Around us, shrouded in vapory mantles, the subalpine forest was far-flung with red firs, lodge pole pines, white barks, and, up in the crags, aged bristlecone pines remained at guard like primeval warriors.
Trees stood motionless
Fixed between earth and heaven
As a testament
Of boldness and majesty these did exalt, bending and swaying with an ebb and flow of invisible winds, as an augur of spectacle, colors of imagery in bold and passive strokes- and all the while, in perfect harmony, sun and moon and all the stars, and all of nature’s abundant wonders extol the unseen God.
In all creation
A proclamation of His
Handiwork is seen
Sunlight purges all dark uncertainties. From a sweeping burst of showers; cleansed mountain air revives us. Raindrops glisten like tears. Preceding us a flock of small birds chirp and flutter and flit; had they been sent to lead us into the wonders we sought? The side hills, and alluvial deposits, are dappled with snow and the soft textures of lady’s slipper, yellow star thistle, and the (recently) endangered bolander’s clover.
In myriad shades
Nature’s palette of colors
Are perfectly brushed
At ninety-two hundred feet- where sunlight turns the mountain lake into a translucent cyan jewel- a persistent and remarkable sense of utter magnificence cascades around us in a shower of discernment and wonders. Life’s complexities are reduced to fine silica as we come to behold (with spiritual eyes) how all the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; and unto the place where all the rivers begin, that is where they return once again.
In natures design
All cycles of life and death
Remain inherent

A naturally beautiful poem of nature's beauty. I wish I could go there and experience the sub alpine glory of our western mountains. Your words remind me how much I miss going there and hiking in its beauty.

ah yes, eternity in a grain of sand... and so much more in store for those with the insight, perspicacity, understanding, wisdom and invaluable discernment, as you have shown in this timeless and timely poetic parable... words to the wise like these are always welcome and oh so very apropos... inherent are the cycles, inimitable the man, from the forests of the mountain through the rings of time they span... from the sunlight to the shadow, from the salmon to the nest of prey, where eagles dare on skyey wings, the voice of God almighty sings... thanks for bringing the sounds of wilderness' solemn grandeur to my study's screen... this poem will stand the test of time... Blessings, Richard.
