TO BE AS HEAVEN AND EARTH
With humble reverence to the Taoist, master Liu I-Ming (1737- ?).
The Spirit of heaven is immeasurably high
Open encompassing endless and constantly nigh
Covering everything containing all forever
It produces myriad beings without judging their virtue ever
It bestows blessings on these beings without any reward
Whether we are respectful or insincere fearless or a coward
Whether we are good or evil attractive or vile
Whether we are violent and obstinate or obedient and docile
That is our decision
Even so we are sanctioned without any hesitation
Subsequently if we can be open-minded magnanimous and receptive to all
And take pity on the old and poor assist those in peril rescue those that fall
Give of ourselves without seeking recompense
Never bear grudges look at other and self with commonsense
Always realise all is one and be like leaven
Then we can be called the companions of Heaven
The body of Earth is extremely tall
Lowly below all else it bears everything and nurtures all
It patiently bears the mass of a mighty mountain
Endures the erosive power of the great waters with no strain
It tolerates being pierced by man and trees alike
Submits to the incessant treads of birds beasts and the like
It uncomplainingly endures being soiled by us
Always flexible yielding and humble devoid of fuss
Have self-control be entirely free of conflict
Then clear all volatility ignore insult and be unaffected by any verdict
Docilely accept hardship illness disaster and our rebirth
Then we can be called the companions of Earth
