News item from Amsterdam, Netherlands:
Taking a page from psychotherapists, Dutch philosophers are opening private practices and charging clients up to $100 an hour to kick around ideas.....

It's a joy to talk to philosophers instead of those darn shrinks.
Philosophers don't care about the "why", only that one thinks.
Shrinks tend to look at things through a filter of guilt complex
And constantly analyze motivations. No wonder we're all wrecks!
Descartes by saying, "I think thus I am!" philosophy did he ply.
Another sage said, "I yam what I yam!" (I believe it was Popeye).
The wisdom of the ages is visible in similar little spurts,
And philosophy does recognize wisdom, especially when it hurts.
Psychiatry says if wisdom is pain, it must definitely be healed.
Philosophy says wisdom is pain, but its content once congealed,
Extracted, and discussed at length, boiled down to its essence,
Shaped and molded so we can use it makes us all less tense.
Psychology says to master ourselves. A very challenging wedge.
Philosophy says to challenge ourselves. To master and not hedge.
Both schools of thought founded on words. Both have given birth
To methods of understanding ourselves. To find our way on earth.
Dutch philosophers have a brilliant idea. Philosophical service.
Talking to folks for a fee and it's making competitors nervous.
But it's merely competition in a field, which has long cried out
For precisely such an innovation and one that we now tout.
Why should psychiatry and psychology have a lock upon my head?
An option's presented itself. I'll see a philosopher instead!
I've tried the other two disciplines. With philosophy I am staying
For now when I talk to myself, I understand what I am saying.

| I occasionally plunk myself down on a bar stool and get free beverages for my hundred dollar philosophy session with the barkeep. A bargain. Patrick |

The hell with the hundred dollars an hour. I go sit on a log and talk to myself. And it was Popeye (The French Connection) who said, “do you pick your feet in Poughkeepsie?” I've always tried to avoid shrinks. Aren't they the ones that advocated lobotomies? And finally, as for a head shop, I thought you were going to talk about Ed's favorite subject, Mary Jane.
