Ladies of the Evening

Heads bowed low

looking through lashes

cautiously you flirt

with death.

Out in the open

for all to see

you hope to be met

by pure kindness.

Filled with hunger

you search for food

you bound for cover

when you hear a sound.

Your sable coat

shows you’re a beauty

and camouflages

your slender form.

Your graceful head

shows no adornment

it should protect you

from prying eyes.

You hear the sound

of playing children

back to the forest

you run and hide.

Oh white tailed ladies

in the meadow

I’ll hide the weapons

you will survive.
