... had no right to rip them off ....

Image (c) 2009, Karla Dorman

... every word of this poem is stolen,
just like the pen.  they were taken
from somewhere else (i forget when

or where)  stop giggling -- serious.
think about it.  every word used was
in another, in some form or fashion,

whether it belonged or not.  had no
right to rip them off, call them mine:
so:  am i Poet?  or am i just a thief?

(c) 2009, Karla Dorman (9/27)

hahahaha, sounds like soemthing my husband always says "We have no orgininal thought because everything we say or do or think has been borrowed from somewhere, something or someone else."

Indeed, Karla. And what' education, except taking in the knowledge and understanding of another. Like the wise Solomon said, "There's nothing new under the sun." (in the world).

... no more a thief than the barrel-load of monkeys that took X number of years to type The Complete Works Of Shakespeare randomly!! I don't for a moment suppose that such a thing has ever been done, but the theory's the same! You'd have to create a complete new Karla-language if you wanted to write without "stealing" that which has been used before. Actually, that sounds a pretty good thought to me... Lewis Carroll had a bit an idea about this. What's the weather-language for "go take a hike, Kate!"???? KleptomaniaK Kate xx

lol, Karla. Really creative poem. I've had these thoughts before. I've often wondered how writers (we) come up with new combinations so frequently. Especially song writers, though. Hugs,

I think you stole these from my stolen poetry. Second-hand thief, You!

No, seriously, I was musing about this the other day-- thinking what if words had souls. What if words are beings--people? Does that then mean that working and reworking a poem makes us slave-drivers? Or what if we just let the poem "come"? In that case, then are we setting "people" free? Or are words seeds-- grown from inspiration... each, if planted, forming a new fruit full of seeds for the taking--formed, reformed, and tasting ever-the-sweeter for having been replanted yet again?

I have heard of people stealing apples before. But if there's an apple there--offered to you for a taste, then isn't it a compliment to take those seeds and plant them in your own mind's garden to see what blossoms there?

You may pluck from my Poe-trees anytime, my friend. --Charlie

I would say that you are not a thief because I don't believe words belong to a specific person, so you couldn't have stolen them. Words are free to use and return, so maybe you are a borrower. I do know that when you are finished working with the words a wonderful poem remains.

But you did rip them off
and now you giggle in glee
as you treat the readers to
this mildly deprecating humor!
You are so creative!
Do you still poetize with a pen? (-:

Very clever write, Karla. I once had a 'friend' who took one of my poems and posted it verbatim on a poetry workshop site that I also belonged to and tried to pass off as their own ... now that hurt! ~Many hugs, Elizabeth

Karla, I suppose from that perspective we are all thieves -- for it has been said that, "it is impossible to think a thought that has not already been thought" -- so you may welcome me and everyone else to the same den of thieves -- but you, a rip off artist, I do not believe that is possible or will ever happen -- peace and love my dear friend --Jon Michael

Words are not unique, they are everywhere and they have ALL been used, it is just a matter how they are arrange. I think you can be let off the hook here, because as for me, I have not seen these words in this order before. Whew! I was worrying about it for a moment.
