Climbing the Stairs

Nine years ago today
The world shared a collective sigh
A moment of silent
Stillness settled on our country
A tremble of shock and horror
As we watched
Our nation shuddered ,impacted by the loss of
Lives ,so many
Down they went ,with those towers

On that early autumn, morning
A day of crystal blue skies
Transformed into a storm sea of back belching smoke
Raining glass and debris
 As we watched

The towers collapsed upon them selves
A house of cards, falling into itself, heaps of twisted steel and concrete
Dust to dust
Knowing, in that instant
So many many lives ceased to be
Among the casualties that Sept day
were the firefighters headed up
Climbing the stairways, laded with tools
Donuts rolls of hose, high-rise packs, spare Scott air bottles
Axes, more hose, rabbit tools, pry bars and pike poles, upwards they climbed
  As we watched
…and knew, they were gone, all gone
For eternity climbing, higher, past the clouds
Silently I said a prayer
again today, I bow my head, for the men

Who died on their way

Up………

Heaven bound

Just. exactly. right.

Devastating and inspiring at one and the same time.

Amen to every word of praise below and all those that are sure to follow.

With gratitude, respect, and admiration,

This hits hard Stan. Keep writing these because we can never forget and unfortunately people do. I don't think any of us will ever forget where we were when it happened and thinking about what went through the minds of all that died that day and all who tried to find someone left alive can never be fully understood. Thank you for this tribute and for all the times you did the same. Wonderful write.
