Once upon a time I had many dreams;

Conquest of love, saving lives, sweet success,

Even my darkest nights contained sunbeams,

Which worthless dictators could not oppress.

Dreams can be harbingers of better times,

They are the mothers of reality;

To plain sentences they add the best rhymes,

They can give birth to immortality.

Once upon a time my dreams lead me on,

Once upon a time morn followed the night,

But time wore me down, most of my dreams gone,

There is no spark left a fire to ignite.

Where there was fire once, now it’s just ember…

I was young once… but when? Can’t remember.

Your sonnet "speaks" of a timeless and universal reality about life in this world/dimension, Peter. Sad but true. Thank you. Love, peace, and best wishes to you,

Tender and sad. It is a wonderful poem. You are grieving life, people you have lost.

I wonder if you want to have a dog? Dogs are very good at being uplifting.
Anyway, you have to pretend, make-believe until you feel better. I do that all the time. I make it up until everything's well.
Try.
Blessings,
Christine
