I look back to a younger time, running a fast race
You carried through a record pace
Man, woman, child cheered you on,
Lining the streets and lawns
And Years later no one recalls the dawn
And home brought you faces and running times now gone...
Today, the road is different, records set
Runners floating over earth where shoes hardly met
And yet they set you on high
Gold medalist, strung with might
From cheers, fields of glory, what a sight!
There you stood with 2 others, laurels strewn
Bronze for him, and Silver festooned
Medals earned like roses in bloom
Eyes yearn to see the running leaders rout
The field of Olympic dreams now shut
You, the lad who carried hope and luck
Time passes for the Old Runner now alone,
Generations have come and gone
Records broken and fallen
Except for the fighting running spirit that day
So many years ago it stayed
For a brief fleeting moment it cared
For the Old Runner so fittingly immortal...
