First love

by Philip Fortune

Near a porch opposite, a pink curtain hung,
Lit by a light from a pale blue room,
And a spotless bed of white lay spread
Alone with one girl—
and a pillow plump
for a lovely head,
and a stream of hair
with a ribbon gold,
Curled, tumbled and fell into a sea of green,
And all was white like a frosty cloud,
Save that quilt of green, and her hair of brown.

And she floated away to a land of light,
On a pillow white, on a cloud so soft—
a golden dog laughed,
the grass was green,
and a bee was singing in a flower
of bygone childhood days.
