Happy heart

by Philip Fortune Where are you now, old man ? — who walked along the banks of the Boyne and spoke to me when I was young. In your daily coat of brightest thoughts filling my heart with laughter; you made me glad to be alive! I still see you there by the river, sitting on that stone wall watching: long gone— where? Here— walking in a different suit, perhaps I am that man! But how? I long to have the wisdom of your happy heart again, beating in deep deep waters of the silvery salmon run … still teeming in the everlasting sun when I am young.
