Taps for my Soldier

A gentle breeze chatters the leaves
as birds sing their greetings.
The sun shines, a day like any other,
and yet like none before.

Two mirrored rows of uniforms
lined up like blue dominoes,
white gloves holding rifles at the ready.

One lone bugle cries.
Twenty-four notes,
each note slow as a tear,
blankets ears and heavy hearts.

In the silence between,
nature holds its breath.
Gone is the wind.
Gone are the bird songs.
Gone is her hold on composure,
all lost in the bugle's lament.

Solemnly a soldier approaches,
white gloves present a tri-fold flag,

and in one final mournful note,
legions of silent voices unite
to call a comrade home
... and a young wife weeps.

Whewwwwwww! Couldn't help but breathe deeply and hold my breath after the second stanza. So touching, and an image all too often repeated over the years. Many thanks and blessing to all those gone and those left behind. We cannot forget.

Beautiful poem, that brings out all the pathos of those lost in battle. That we should never forget them. That we should never forget the survivors. Victor

CJ... this is So Beautifully said! I still have mine 1/2 finished and I ran into a rut, with the wording. This is not easy to see and know what all these wonderful soldiers put themselves through for US!
Your pen speaks Volumes of a lonely Sad heart! And the many who had to Sacrifice!
I'm glad you got all this out today!
PEACE! Love! HOPE! FAith and WArm HuGs, Sheeeoxxo

A heart wrenching tribute CJ. What angers me to no end is that the blood is being spilled in the WRONG COUNTRY. Osama (who was the real bad guy, when last I checked) resides elsewhere. Incredibly sad, and an incredible waste of human life. Yet it's a sacrifice that all are prepared to make...they are the bravest of souls. The last stanza, "legions of silent voices unite to call a comrade home" is amazing stuff. It gave me chills. Blessings, Michelle

Nicely done CJ. On Rembrance Day, and everyday, we remember those from the past, the young men now in harms way on our behalf, and the young families who grieve. Malcolm Watts
