Autumn's Shadows

The hazy September sun peered through the open

window, casting long shadows against the wall.

And although she had always loved the fall,

it often reminded her of death once the

trees stood tall and naked, limbs

outstretched, like arms longing to be

filled.

And it was what came next that unsettled

her most… winter… cold, lifeless and

seemingly without end. But she reminded

herself of season’s change, and how nothing

in life was truly permanent, except for change itself…

a feeling that both comforted and distressed her.

Still, she was wise enough to know there were

those things she was unable to control…

things like people, emotions not her own,

and seasons. So she smiled, just a little, knowing

all would pass, giving way to yet another spring.

I can really relate to this one right now. It's almost as if you wrote it about me. Love the imagery of the trees in the first verse. Hugs,

I love the imagery of the first stanza... I love autumn, but dread the winters chill. With all going on in my life right now I am hoping that the winter that is currently threatening will quickly pass into the fresh green of new growth of early spring.
Sigh...

it seemed to be of your own life,
and the imagery and simile in the first strophe
is sumptuous. I love poetic prose. and your
new bio-picture is lovely Dawn.

Dawn, love the imagery, especially in the first stanza which
captures my favorite season. One think we can always count on
is change and the speed of change, which you deal with beautifully
in the closing stanza. -gene.

It's as though you've expressed all the conflicting feelings that this beautiful time of year brings to my heart. I love late summer and I love fall; I just wish they'd last longer. I feel like I could release my tentative way and embrace, with abandon, all the gifts of this time of year if I could only accept (or for a time forget about) the next season waiting behind the curtain. Sometimes, I feel I'm unfair to winter as it has many attributes, many beauties all its own. I do so love long winter walks after a fresh and deep snowfall. Winter is a time of withdrawal and introspection - a time of preparation to emerge anew when the time is right. Sigh.

Dawn - Enjoyed your Autumn's Shadows and its philosophy of circular motion which seem to be the pattern of life and the wisdom of the lines:

Still, she was wise enough to know there were

those things she was unable to control…

things like people, emotions not her own,

and seasons.

"Autumn's Shadows" truly describes the mood of autumn and winter. I have similar feelings myself; however, as I age I am so thankful for life that I try to pull from even the worst days the glory and joy that can be found in all nature. I suppose it is a mindset of sorts how we greet each season. I love your poem.

Dawn,
Fine philosophical reflection and rightful bow to the inevitabilities of change, death and re-birth. I like the quiet air of this poem, its wise and tender music.
