Season of Grace

Caught in a peaceful breeze,

gliding and twirling until

softly landing on my lap.

A jewel colored gem

from a trusty old Oak,

on a hazy October

morning.

In early spring, you were

but a budding leaf on a

branch, giving hope for a

promising new season -

by summer, a lush green -

fully blossomed, offering

shade.

Then, your most splendid –

your most impressive, in

autumn, only once you had

reached maturation.

As I think about life,

it seems as though

something important

has been terribly

misplaced and  forgotten.

There is often such value

and emphasise placed

upon youth and its beauty.

Yet true beauty can be

found with age…through

that which has been lived

and experienced…

through what has been

earned…through what

has been offered…

a gift only obtained

through the color of

life’s seasons and the

beauty of aging with

grace.

A great metaphor to portray the beauty of human aging with grace to the color and stateliness of the oak, Dawn. Well done with life and color--I only have to look at the lines in my own face to see again the weathering of each season..........Jerry

The photo reminds me of the one I took/used for my article Thoughts on Home; I love it. Your softness and approachability and willingness to mentor/teach gleam through your words just as the sun backlights the leaves in your beautiful photograph. You are reflective and 'honoring' and aware.

So incredibly true Dawn. Well penned. I use to be asked to draw a portrait of children or young adults and it was so very difficult not to represent them as the near blank slate that they were. For there are no wisdom lines nor hard earned lessons perched on their lips or gazing out of their eyes yet. How can I paint what is not there? I sometimes succeeded in merely suggesting the possibility of such. Your poem is a wonderful example of this. Love it. J'nia

Dawn,
It's that, "...landing on my lap" that sets the mood and tone of this gorgeous poem - intimate, personal, human and natural in one, and great wisdom, once again, in your thought and elegant delivery.

I wish I could be like that leaf that just accept each age and stage for what it is and thrive in the beauty of the moment, Dawn. Your beautiful meditation is so soothing and has such a sage aroma to its inspired wisdom. Slowly I am learning that to be joyful in my (current!) skin lends a glow which bestows its own healthy exuberance. Such an aura exudes a very beneficent grace and blessing. Thank you, Kate xx

This is a real eye opening, make one think write. I can so see your heart and mind inspired by that colour of the leaf, not when it is young and green but now as it is at it's most special. Too bad more sons and daughters couldn't see this in their senior parents.

This is absolutely beautiful and such a precious way to look at what we all live to obtain if we are lucky . . . Age. Like the seasons, beauty is found in all of life's stages, but it is when we have aged enough to understand what makes life worth living which gives us more "real" pleasure than the rambunctiousness of youth and the coming to grips with life and fighting middle-age ever could . . .
Reviewed by Jeanette Cooper 10/28/2009
I agree with the concept of your poem about "beauty of aging". We need to respect and revere our older generation more than we do because they have much wisdom to share from their trials, struggles, failures, successes and their life-learnings. People don't get old in the brain, only their bodies and outer flesh. Nice poem, Dawn.
