How?

A promise... Help me keep it...

How does one keep her promise without the pain?
Without bewildered by the promises of others
Without being thirsty of presence and voice
Without the tears on her pillow still fresh and wet.

Without the lies that pretend to comfort
Without the temptations of another’s flesh
Without the madness that stains her soul
Without the questions waiting for answers.

How does one keep her promise without the pain?
Without trying to be less human
Without reminded of what should be forgotten
Without poisoned by unshakable fears.

Without the empty power of human strength
Without the winning attitude of false character
Without the intelligence of uncaring philosophy
Without the pride of selfish dignity.

How does one keep her promise without the pain?
Without those meaningless laughter
Without those childish magic and wonders
Without those silly movies and songs.

Without those weathered friends
Without those faithful enemies
Without those foolish dreams
Without those earthly moves.

How does one keep her promise without the pain?
Without being stranded by the memories
Without being lost and confused
Without being wasted in the realm of insanity.

Without the pressure of being alive
Without the lust of death
Without the power of romance
Without the absence of you.

How do I keep my promise without the pain?
I do not know my loyal one
I keep my promise by the moment
I try to exist without guarantees
I move along where the promise brings me
I save my whole self by holding the end of the rope
I begin the morning without you to greet the sunrise
I rest at night without you at the other side of the bed
I live in this world because on my promise
I have given a million times when I am in your arms.

How do I keep my promise without the pain?
I will never know my sweet one
It does not matter how
As long as I have you
I will keep it with everything life has for us
No greater pain can break my promise
Not even my soul can…

God, my friend...how to find such a way...and this, so openly human and so raw...painful and still so damn beautiful, sigh...

The bard said it best when he said to thine own self be true,,,I guess as long as one keeps a promise to self all will be well.
Thank you for this excellent poem.

Love is a sometimes painful journey. Without love is always a lonely journey.

I like that there's no actual (or easy) resolve to the question. The writer is dealing with it; the reader begins to question his/herself. Good write, dear.

One can only stay true to ones self.. no mater what pain it comes with. This I know a lot about. Perfectly expressed! Excellent

Erica, isn't the pain worth it so long as you have your sweet love? There is much pain in being honest and real sometimes. But it is by far the best way. Bill
