Thy Will Be Done

I'm positive I'm not alone in wondering what an extinction event would be like. Our curiosity and astonishment in the face of tragedy is what made movies like "Deep Impact" and "Dante's Peak" so popular.

Riots have ensued, stealing has begun.
Laws are useless words; order comes undone.
Wide-eyed faces roam the streets without hope.
Jittery feet dance on slippery slope.
The crowd is mad - gone suddenly insane.
Innocent eyes search for safety in vain.
The time has come for world's debt to be paid.
Life as we know it will certainly fade!

Meteoroids hurtle towards the Earth.
Burdened shoulders calculate their self-worth.
News has spread...been confirmed...now awaited.
Human extermination dubbed 'fated'.
Headlines advise to kiss loved-ones goodbye.
Each trembling chin turned up, aimed at the sky.
Last-minute questions weave through mind and soul.
Past sins and regrets have taken a toll.

Scorching fireball punctures the atmosphere.
Water landing...hungry waves swallow pier.
Feet pound pavement, intent on high and dry.
Panicked people ignore the victim's cry.
Wall of water...eating land in large bites.
Consuming circuits; extinguishing lights.
Gulping lives one by one in a blind rage.
Slamming the door on their watery cage.

Meteorite lands like a jet liner.
Sizzling flames lick at the corner diner.
Explosions hurl runners...implode the still.
Fires are charging bulls with a mind to kill.
Buildings collapse, trapping the mass en route.
Red, crackling giant...with a deadly boot.
Yellow and orange are faceless villains,
Engulfing...claiming lives in the millions.

Country crops ablaze and livestock destroyed.
Simple beauty...now a traveling void.
Town folk pray, clutching their faith to chest...
Some comfort as they perish like the rest.
Windmills, churches, lumberyards sparked in flame.
Urgent voices mingle, calling God's name.
Land toasted black, scarred veins beneath the soil.
Flaming snakes squeeze trees in their fatal coil.

Where will you run? Where is it you will hide?
Will you embrace fate with arms opened wide?
Will you riot, casting aside your faith?
Will solemn grace receive this fiery wraith?
Will your loved-ones be gathered close at hand?
Will nervous fingers spin your wedding band?
Will prayers be said? Will memories play?
Tell me...what will you be doing this day?

** I've never understood the mentality behind riots when faced with disaster. Personally, I'd rather be with my loved-ones if something like this ever happened...cherishing our last minutes together.

I'll probably be caught hugging my dogs if there is no forward warning. Otherwise, I will be with my daughters hugging my dogs. Liz

Ok, Sheila, great piece, entertaining and very well rhymed and timed. I'm a rhyming poet basically but sometimes I like to venture elsewhere. enjoyed this

Excellent depiction of the end of the world, Sheila...the unfortunate reality is that the mind works in different ranges depending on the individual...some will riot, some will love...

nice work...

Your last verse sums it up for me too Sheila! This was a very disturbing poem, one that should make us beware of what can happen and try to be prepared for it, thanks for sharing!

You certainly provide much substance for reflection via your verses here, Sheila. The questions that you pose in the last stanza in partivular give one pause for thought. Whether from outer space or from our own doing, there are days when I feel that what you describe here is as Earth's plight unavoidable. Thank you. Love and best wishes,

Regis

Excellant look at the fall out of natural tragedy and no I cannot understand the concept of looting except maybe a last minure attempt to make people feel they own something material.

Sheila,

Powerfully penned--one feels the terror, of wanting to be with loved ones--but following others, like lemmings, into the panicked streets...well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

This reminds me of the eruption at Pompeii and how they found mothers remains holding their children next to them. I hope that we all will be repenting and asking for God's mercy on us.

Sheila,

A hypothetical situation but not that far-fetched from Armageddon. I would try to make sure my family were safe if possible then probably fight on the side of good versus evil. The devastation you speak of is unimaginable for the human mind but one has to ask himself, "Will You Be Ready." When the end comes and the angels sound those trumpets there won't be any place to hide. Love, Peace and Blessings Always, Paul.

Great imaginative write for sure, but I be putting my trust in the creator, if we die, tis not the end.
