Igloos in the Snow

One of very few happy memories from my childhood. Merry Christmas to all!

Igloos in the Snow

A million flakes, on the backs of a million more

Scattered snowdrifts look like shipwrecks dotting the shore

Burrowed deep in my bones, is the chill in the air

Pirouetting flakes dance at the end of my stare

Sipping hot chocolate to keep from growing cold

Lost in the moment, traveling to days of old

As a kid, the chill never seemed to pierce my skin

I’d stack pail after pail of snow, wearing a grin

With the help of my brothers and my only sis,

We’d build an igloo to stem winter’s blistery kiss

We’d use the plow’s snow bank as the igloo’s main side

Finished, it was the perfect place for us to hide

I remember what it was like inside its shell

Staring upward, I was a living snow angel

It felt as though I was the last person alive;

A tiny bee, in charge of an abandoned hive

A secret ice cavern to share with my siblings,

Where imagination roams and cold never stings

Back in the now, I glance down at my hot cocoa

I have aged since those days of igloos in the snow

Maybe growing up does muffle the child within

So, why do marshmallows in my cup make me grin?

Because – they’re blocks of snow from my igloo that day

Seems my imagination never went away!

Merry Christmas to all!

It never ceases to amaze me how the tiniest object in this world would ignite pleasant memories from our past. This poem is a good example.

Thanks for sharing this moment from a place so different from sunny Southern California where I was born and lived. The imagery was rich and when I closed my eyes I was there in that igloo young again.

Hi Sheila,

I can certainly relate to your poem. Spent many days playing in it and now it seems like all I get to do is shovel it. The snow that is. (lol)Just received your new book from Amazon. Can't wait to get started reading it. Have a Healthy, Prosperous and Happy New Year. Peace, Love, Blessings & Friendship Always, Paul.

Shelia,
This brought back memories of my childhood growing up with lots of snow and ice. You are right, we never felt the chill! I was the oldest of seven children, I grew up making snow men and snow cream! Even now when I see snow fall it takes me back to better days. Enjoyed this, Shelia!

Many blessings,
~Linda

I enjoyed this Sheila. And hopefully your imagination will remain fertile well into the sunset of your life. I was quickened too with the eccentric imagery of snowdrifts and shipwrecks in context to the content. Like walking into a pastel room and finding a bright white rose.
Hoping all is well ...
Blessings ...

Oh, those wonderful memories of yesteryears! Your poem captures the the feelings and sense of magic of you as a young child enjoying the ever-present moment. I recall the first snow I ever saw--there wasn't enough to make a snowman or igloo, but we learned all too quickly how to make snowballs and throw them. LOL

Shiela, this brought back so many wonderful memories of my own childhood. I grew up the middle child of nine in a poor household. So when those snows of winter came we stuffed cardboard in our boots to cover the holes, wrapped bread bags around our socks to keep them dry and off we'd go, and yes we too used the snow plow drifts as our igloos, forts, usually tunnel systems and secret passages and our transport would be sleds and tobagons if we had them or just chunks of cardboard. I often feel sorry for today's kids for they have only electronic imaginations. We learned engineering, construction and decorating skills from those ice houses as well as defence construction when we would have our massive neighborhood snowball fights. Anyway sorry I am rambling but your write plus the snow that fell last night and the howling winds outside brought back a flood of memories...thank you.

hugs and Merry Christmas to you Shiela
