Falling Off the Mountain

The allegorical mountain may be harder to climb and summit than any geophysical mass of volcanic or tectonic earthen crust. Sometimes, when the question is called high up on some ferociously tenuous perch, a climber is confronted squarely by the aggregate of his worst fears...only to realise in an epipheny of wry logic that 'falling' isn't really something to fear at all; gravity, on the other hand, is a legitimate source of serious a priori concern! With this in mind, herewith follows a Zen koan for your reflective rumination.

Falling Off the Mountain:
The Mountain Koan

You can’t fall off a mountain.

It’s not something you would notice

While clinging to that ledge up there,

But carefully consider: You really can’t!

Where does a mountain begin?

Where does it end? At which altitude does

It start? How deep do its roots reach?

How broad is its circumference?

When we tightly close our eyes

Does any mountain cease to exist?

How far do we need to travel from it

Before we have actually left it?

When you finish climbing a route

Does the mountain disappear?

When we travel away from it,

Do we take any of it with us?

As your weary fingers peel off

The little ‘nothing’ holds high up

The face, as gravity makes you slip,

Are you falling off the mountain? No!

When we start toward the summit

Does the mountain take us with it?

Think hard about it; no matter how hard

You try, you can’t fall off a mountain!

I've hiked/climbed to the top of many mountains--breathless; heart beating at over ten thousand feet above sea level. Yes, I see from your poem that we can't fall off a mountain. We can fall or drop or roll to another part ofthe mountain. What happens if we fell toward the moon from a mountain--impossible but metaphorically maybe not?

Deeply thought provoking, I enjoyed this one - if you can't fall off a mountain, what do you fall from? Excellent -

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Profound thought... This one will have me thinking for a little while. I think maybe it is like the string of the kite holding the kite up...

Going to think some more...

When presented as the mountain continues below the surface of the earth - you can't fall off a mountain. You have given me a lot to think about. In what other areas of my life can I use this?

God bless you. Kathy
