Light hearted bits of nothingness after the haiku style, jotted down in the Sawtooth Ridge area late one October evening (1974), after the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn (Peak) with trombone (no lie, we played 'FLIEGENDE WALKURE' on the summit) and too much hot Wyler's and rum. [A bit of historical background: The trombone is the modern ancestor of the medieval 'Sackbut' and despite the centuries of development hence, still bears a remarkable resemblance to its ancient forebear. It is simply a coincidence that after lugging a trombone to the uppermost pinacle of a 12,250 foot mountain peak and back, all you want to do is get your BUT in the SACK...]

Summit Verses for Trombone in B Flat

SNOW ON THE MOUNTAINS
LIKE A SWEATER
COVERS HER BREASTS

MARMOT PELLETS
GREET US ON THE SUMMIT
A SPARROW LAUGHS TOO

GRIM AND BLEAK
MOUNT RITTER SITS AND GRINS
REMEMBERING LAST YEAR

DARK CLOUDS
MOVING OVERHEAD
JEALOUS GUARDIANS

THE SLOW TRIP DOWN
LIKE MELTING ICE CREAM
SUGARY GLISSADES

AFTER DINNER COLD;
YELLOW ICE AWAITS US
IN MORNING COOK POTS!
