Red mist

The sting of a hairbrush against a young girl’s thigh
The anguish came from the gaze not the bruise
All the cold stares and chilling moments of silence
All the tears shed for no reason
She often wondered had it always been this way?
She spent her nights living fearful dreams

Mother why do you hurt me so?
Mother why must you taunt me so?
Mother, Mother why will you not let me go?

Was trying so hard to be what she couldn't
Tried desperately to be the girl that was wanted
Tried to repress the anger that burned through her eyes
And the confusion that reigned inside
Through the years each layer of skin peeled away
Now it’s too late for these scars to heal

And as the rope tightens round her neck
Her life will become the worthless speck
She’d always been made to believe it was

Mother why do you hurt me so?
Mother why must you taunt me so?
Mother, Mother why will you not let me go?

I wish things like this didn't happen--the parental devouring of the young and innocent. But, horribly, tragically, it does with some.
Impressive writing and deeply moving, as well...
