Rows of headstones cascading down the hill
Names and dates inscribed forever instilled
Soldiers who gave their lives for freedom
Seeking never a trumpet sound or stardom
A tradition dating back to the civil war
Where brother fought brother in fields of gore
A wife places flowers on a limestone cross
To remember a husband who’s forever lost
Brothers and sisters mourn their beloved
Who gave her heart while others suffered
Men and women heroes all
Now prone where they once stood tall
Children remember on this special day
Loved ones who neglected to stay
Instead gave their lives for our country
On foreign soil in tanks and infantry
Mothers and fathers forever missed
Who left suddenly without a kiss
A nation salutes those who gave their lives
And remembers those families forever deprived
Of mothers and daughters, fathers and sons
Who are proud of their service for everyone
Who cherishes freedom knowing the cost
Of those men and women who are never lost
