Drifting Away

In my Mom's last years she loved to visit my sister's place in the country, where she'd sit for hours absorbing all that Nature had to offer. She was at peace there!

Captivated by the splendid vista before her,
She stares across the open field
Where a multitude of tall green grasses sashay
Neath a cloudless brilliant blue sky!
Stately oak, birch and poplars border the field
Branches reaching into the universe
A warm breeze rustling emerald leaves
That to her, seem to shiver in response!
Randomly scattered wildflowers offer
Vibrant bursts of colour against velvety green,
Their splashes of red, yellow, soft lilac and gold,
Nature’s brushstrokes on a perfect canvas!
She smiles, a hummingbird hovers close by,
From its tiny wings, that familiar buzzing sound
While birdsongs drift through the open windows!
Warm sunbeams ignite her soft gray hair
Changing each strand into shimmering silver!
Her face, a myriad of deeply etched lines…
Evidence of her journey thus far,
But there’s a sparkle in her bright blue eyes.
She’s never been more aware of nature’s bounty!
Sleep slowly begins to tug at her eyelids
Reluctant to miss even one moment, she fights it!
But resistance is futile; sandman always wins!
So with a smile playing at the corners of her mouth
Her mind blissfully blank, she drifts away…
Happy, safe and secure under the watchful gaze
Of Mother Nature herself!

There is nothing like the countryside to revitalize and put one at peace. Your mother was fortunate to have such a retreat. Patrick

Becoming drowsy, then nodding off within the sight and scent of this peaceful, beautiful place that you so aptly described seems to me to be absolutely perfect. Great poem, Anna.

I have such a total sense of peace while reading your lovely poem that feautures nature at its best with a glowing vision of your Mother's later years. I can see her face and imagine her sparkle as she views mother nature with an even deeper love and understanding than she did as a younger women. This is absolutely a beautiful poem, well penned and well enjoyed! Joy L. Hale

I think the older we get the more we see...especially of the beauty and wonderful miracles of nature around us. In youth we see and note things beautiful but don't fully appreciate them until we know our time is running out to see such wonders. Beautiful write indeed Anna.

Beautifully rendered, Anna. Absolutely beautiful. You painted your mother's reposing portrait so well I could envision her sitting there taking in all there was to see. She is smiling now.
