To Spoil the Fertile Sod

It has long been recognized by therapists that of all the destructive parenting styles the authoritarian ("I said it and that settles it") style is the most damaging to a child.

His father taught him that the world was cruel

Dangerously inhabited by knaves and fools.

He showed his boy no mercy when

He failed to stand the test,

For he’d make him grow up strong, he said,

He’d make his son the best.

Spare the rod, his father said, and spoil

The wayward child.

So vigilant the father was, he never cracked

A smile.

Anger hand in hand with truth, or so his father said,

Would make a man out of the child, when wit

And wisdom wed.

So diligent, the father watched, and every word or deed

Was scrutinized and criticized and every bitter weed,

Drawn from the soil of a boy’s  young heart

And crushed beneath the feet

Of the one who vowed to raise him right

By rigid force and  creed,

Righteous acts with love amiss will spoil

The fertile sod.

The son he raised beneath the rod grew up

And  cursed his God.

This is so very true, and I know a lot of kids raised in the fifties who can relate.

You make some very powerful points in your verses, Linda. I can relate to much of what you express. Thank you. Love and best wishes to you,

So much truth within these lines...
I believe that often times it is not what the parents intend to be like, but it is their own defense mechanism at what seems to be a battle of losing control...

this grieves my heart, it is all so very true
I can relate to this as I myself have experienced life as this boy
but by the grace of God I was spared hatred & made my own footprints
Your words reach deep into the soul with profound expressions of love's imporatnce, the closing line just hits my soul hard....

Linda,
This is all of the things other reviewers have said so far: strong, interesting, heartbreaking and challenging and of course it calls into question the acts and skills of parenting and asks if there is a best way, a true way to resolve such a complex task. I really enjoyed this piece. Well done!

Yep, that about says it all. Had one of these, then after the divorce had the "permissive, I don't care what you do" type of parent. There was no hope for us, so we thought. But some of us discovered that our Heavenly Father was our real parent and that if we listened to him, life would be a whole lot different for us. And it is. Bless you, J'nia

This is very interesting, Linda. It makes me happy to see I could be right by not imposing strict punishment. I want my children to love mom and dad. After all, it is I who must find solutions to anger - not the children. The way of parenting is to nurture.

Heartbreaking, indeed, the damage done to children in the name of love - well penned. Powerful lesson in these lines, Linda, effectively written. As Karen alluded to in her review, the words linger and affect our lives, to this day. Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I can remember my own parents saying this to me; I remember the frustration and disappointments I felt (and still feel, years later). Yes, Linda, words do hurt, and if one is not careful, they can do an awful lot of damage that will take years to undo. I know; I've been there; I was that child. Heartbreaking write; well penned!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( >tears! <

Makes one stop and think...as a parent, grandparent and teacher I also think that one of the most damaging comments that a parent can say is..."Because I said so!" I am often ask by children why their parents say this with no explanation...a thought provoking write indeed!
Blessings from Ky.
