It's Never Too Late

Past and Present were poured into a cup called life. Present provided the substance which was filtered through a screen called Past and poured out into a basin called Eternity.

It’s Never Too Late

Forgive, some may say, forgive and forget

Let go of resentment you’ve no right to it.

Release all the pain and the raw incident

Will enter the past—which no longer exists.

There’s only today, as some people say,

The past has expired and the future just may

Never arrive, there is no guarantee

That the sun will tomorrow come out of its sleeve.

But I tell you my friend that a life is composed

of the challenges past and the future unknown,

That lives in our dreams and our fears and pretense

As we sort through the years and try to make sense

Of the challenges, triumphs, sorrows and toil

In the years that we’ve traveled this earth’s golden soil,

Of the harvests that grew from the seeds that were sown

Before we discerned them or made them our own.

Forgive and remember is a far better path

To wring the pain out of the hurts of our past.

To envision the Arms that carried us through

And believe in the Heart that made everything new.

We can’t soar the heights while still chained to the past

But the links won’t be broken by pretense—our task

Is to plumb to the depths the extent of our pain,

And soar on the wings that are broken—again.

Soar with a strength born of adversity

Ever nearer the heart of our Father and King

Who wrote it all down in His grand Record Book

His sufferings and trials and the path that He took,

To the place of the skull where He hung on a tree

and offered his blood—an eternal reprieve

To those who reviled him and spit in His face

For He knew it was theirs—and not His—the disgrace.

He didn’t conceal it—not one little thing

But he told it and wrote it and remembers its sting.

And that, my dear friends, is the essence of love

To measure it truly and still rise above

The right to revenge and surrender our hate

To the Author of Love—for it’s never too late.

Absolutely BRILLIANT, Linda. Bravo indeed. I like the way you have been able to present your arguments so lucidly and with great insight and wisdom - yet keep the tone light and the metre tight and spare while delving deeply. I applaud you indeed. Yes, so often we come down in favour of one side of the other, missing the blessing of the balance of compromise, taking the "right stuff" from both sides. I have just watched a BBC documentary on sleep and dreaming, and one scientist postulates that, without nightmares, the human race would almost cease to function. He argues that nightmares are the blessing of enabling us to work through and problem solve, and to prepare us for the "battles" ahead. They are therefore empowering, helping us to overcome our fears. Interesting stuff! :)) xx

Your poetry always lifts and teaches, Linda. That is why I love it so much. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that Christ remembers the sting...I believe He must in order to know how we feel as we try to struggle through the adversity in our lives. He felt the sting and pain of all of our sins and trials when He suffered and died for us. The beautiful part about it all though...is that I believe He has forgiven and forgotten those who committed the pain, for the scriptures say that He will remember them no more. I guess He is the greatest teacher of how we should then also respond.
Thanks for reviewing that lesson for me.

I hear you Linda but then again we should not just forgive some injustices no matter what, when people thread outside of the law as child molesters and wife abusers etc they are also flaunting and laughing at God's laws and should be punished not only when they stand before him but here on earth as well. It may not bring comfort to the victims but it may prevent others from having to cry on God's shoulders in pain, unnecessary shame and feelings of hopefullness.

Linda, Your poem is wonderful & expresses hope, love is such a virtuous expression of selflessness, but for some carrying a harness of vengeance they just cannot see past the reality of love vs lust or possessions of control or whatever it is that deems them into a dark place of pain. Love Embraces & Heals... I so enjoyed this perceptual poem of wisdom & faith for Love.
