Fallen Leaf
By Jim Stewart c 1977
We all sat at the big oak table
On Christmas and Thanksgiving Day
Grandpa would carve the turkey
And we would all hear Grandma say
God bless this food and the people here today
Put another leaf in the table, We've got company on the way.
All of my aunts and uncles would all come around
Even a few of my cousins, when they were in town.
We'd swap white lies and sometimes tell the truth.
But when it came to eating that turkey, we knew just what to do.
People come and people go
But I guess I'll just remain.
Now I'm the only one at that big oak table
On Christmas and Thanksgiving Day.
But I can still see Grandpa carving that turkey
And I can still hear Grandma say
God Bless this food and the people here today
Put another leaf in the table, we've got company on the way.
