Three M & Ms
By Adolph Caso
Falling asleep
can be so sweet!
At the corner of the counter
This little girl,
Of not more than two,
Sat on a stool eating lunch.
Her grandmother to one side,
The young mother standing by,
Her eyes beaming in golden brown,
Wispy hair rambling on the ears,
Concentrating on her food,
She was immersed in rapture.
“Hello!” I said in a low voice.
“Why are you so pretty?”
I asked in genuine admiration.
Shy, she turned to her grandmother,
Then to her mother, who proudly claimed her.
“What is your name?”
Her mother intervened with the name.
Smiling with approval,
Abby continued with her lunch.
Seating, with my own
At the other end of the counter,
I began chatting with a friend.
Unexpectedly,
Sliding down from the stool,
Bag-in-hand,
She began to walk towards me.
Her eyes onto mine,
She put her little hand into the bag,
And,
Withdrawing three M & Ms,
She placed them gently into my receptive hand.
The palate satisfied,
The sweetness of the chocolate
Reaching my heart,
The miracle defined!
In a moment,
and,
in silence,
I felt true happiness leaving its mark.
That night, the miracle continued:
Falling asleep
was never as sweet;
Falling asleep
never as deep!
