Instead of Two

I wrote this one night after I had a visit with my Dad, my one year old sister Destiny, and her mother Nicole. There was just so much tension between my dad and her. I needed to let it all out.

I bet you need reassurance for the flaws that grace your skin
I bet you want a reward for not looking back and giving in
I guess that's just the way you really think about yourself
I guess that's all your good for, gathering dust on the shelf

If you can't find it in you to get up then get out
If you can't live with it then you'll have to live without
If I couldn't hear your voice would I be straining to hear
If I couldn't feel you breathing would I have you this near

Instead of me
Instead of you
Instead of us
Instead of two

I bet you never thought that what you are is what I lack
I bet you tried so hard to stay off the drugs and off your back
I guess that's another part of you that no one knows
I guess that's just a part of you that sits back and never shows

If you can't stand on your own two feet and tell me to my face
If you can't take down your walls then can you set the pace
If I couldn't keep you from leaving and walking away
If I couldn't do what I should have then should I have to pay

Instead of me
Instead of you
Instead of us
Instead of two

I bet you couldn't find it in you to leave me behind
I bet you wouldn't go a day without me on your mind
I guess that's how I'd like to see it, even thought it's wrong
I guess that's wishful thinking and trying to be strong

If you can't look away then take a big look around
If you can't talk in sentences then don't make a sound
If I couldn't wake up without wishing you were there
If I couldn't wonder everyday how this is fair

Instead of me
Instead of you
Instead of us
Instead of two

I bet you never thought that you'd live to see the day
I guess that's cause enough for us to be this way
If you can't see it now then I know you never will
If I couldn't tell you then just know I love you still

You weave words and feelings together like a magic carpet. "If you can't look away then take a big look around..." Wow! You are a brilliant writer! I hope you can keep on writing this way; it gives you a taste of freedom.
