Fifty Chevy

This for Tom and Howard

Skidding down the Bellvue Road
Just a bit too fast
Old Tom was out of cigarettes
Damned near out of gas
Long cloud of dust behind him
As he first caught sight of town
From the top of Burd Hill
Throttle down

He drove a Fifty Chevy
That he bought in Sixty-four
Three speed on the column
Good sized dents in either door
Living in the bunkhouse
For a long spell at a time
Was enough to make a cowboy
Lose his mind

He walked into the Wheel
Boilermakers all around
Slam that shot glass on the bar
Toss the beer and whisky down
You should have seen them drop
Those little glasses in their beer
Then stumble out the back door
Feed the deer

Hey Joe – gimme a haircut
I sure could use a shave
You’d best have a taste of whisky
Before you touch that straight-edge blade
We’ll head back to the Wheel
Boilermakers all around
Slam shot glasses on the bar
Toss ambrosia down

Know none of cowboys or anything west of the Mississippi so I feel I can't comment on them, but as for the content I think we all, in every part of the country have had our 50 Chevies & bars name of Wheels...though mine were a 68 Mustang GT500 & a bar called the Penalty Box in Wildwood, NJ...I also remember shots of southern comfort with a beer chaser & sitting on the beach in the ocean totally lit smoking a bone...;-)ed

It's a whole world in itself, Duke, a world of friendship, uncertainty, but of definite identity and lifestyle, too,
and it has always intrigued me.
