The Crystal Heart

I was born on a cold winter evening,
The kind when snow falls and tree limbs are bare.
From that very moment everyone knew
I would be strong beyond compare.
Well over the years I did grow strong.
I learned that my heart could take much pain.
Yet no one really knew what I hid inside,
A heart covered with tears like rain.
Every time life happened around me
I immediately had to be strong.
"You're the strong one. You can handle it."
That is where they were wrong.
For on that cold winter evening
Many years from now set apart,
I was given one beautiful yet fragile thing,
A glorious crystal heart.
And every time life occurs around me
That small heart begins to crack
From the immense downpour of tears
Caused by pain you can never take back.
So next time when you are with me
Realize I am different from all;
For someone gave me a special gift
That will eventually lead to my downfall.
Be gentle with this crystal heart of mine.
Take it from me with care.
Keep it close to your heart at all times
For it has been shattered and lays open, bare.

A crystal heart is easily shattered yet its beauty is like a rose.

A crystal heart is a thing of exquisite beauty and surprising durability Jerri
