The Scream

The  suburban square
has 4 houses
including our own.

It's very quiet except
some nights in bed
I hear a human scream.

Did it come from
the old couple
always working their garden?

Or the newcomers
with a young son
whose hair is golden curls?

Or was it the Robinsons?
He is always golfing.
She drinks and smokes a lot.

"Did it wake you?" I ask
my wife but she
just turns away from me.
