Tomorrow Is A Stranger

Who knows what tomorrow brings?

Tomorrow’s bride, tomorrow thoughts,

Love and laughter… forever after…

And someone moved past the window

Like a whisper.

Counting time, the clock of life beats like a heart

As pages turn and calendars burn

In seasons of so far so good…

She came down from her ivory tower

But now she waits in the empty heart of night,

A vacant, vast uncertain part of living.

Breathing softly, dreaming dreams of love

In the neon's blinking crutch…

In the shadowed, silken touch of a starless night.

And the stranger peered through the window…

Envying her… despising her….

Yet longing to lie with her…

She stirred, but dared not look into those eyes.

Silence deafening…slumber, a hideaway from fear.

And a smile caressed her lips

As yesterday whispered by.

A sound-the window-a man-

Please don’t-the knife-the scream-

The blood…

And all her dreams of a lifetime disappeared

In the twilight of moments never…

What a dramatically well-crafted lament of unfulfilled "it might have been"!
