Dedicated to my mother and all mothers on Mothers Day.

sanctuary
(dedicated to the memory of my mother on this Mother’s Day)

mid-morning light filters through paned glass panels
haloing silver hair, a torso sculpted with ages arch
pale white skin intricately mapped with venous blue
squinted eyes brimming in excitement seasoned with zest

volumes stacked at table side for a treasured daily rite
family Bible, Billy Graham, Daily Devotions and crosswords
gone from the pile, Somerset Maugham, Pearl Buck, Hemmingway
the sanctuary i visited to replenish my soul with her spirit

in that place as in no other i had influence, adoring audience
enduring love wafting about to wash away my insecurities
mid-morning light yet filters through paned glass panels
though the seat of prominence is forever vacated by time’s writ

Jon, this was beautiful! My grandpa sat in the kitchen in the mornings and read his Bible. I saw the face of God in him when I looked at him. My grandmother was saved by his walk with the Lord. Oh what a joy it will be when we see them again one day!

Thank you for your example in itself..sanctuary in words for others!

God Bless

In Christ

THANK YOU, JON. FOR A MOTHER DOES TRY IN SOME SMALL WAY TO LEAVE BEHIND THE MEMORY OF THOSE THINGS...THAT REALLY MATTER. HOPING THAT ONE DAY OUR CHILDREN WILL REMEMBER THERE IS A PLACE...A 'SANCTUARY'
TO SEEK AFTER. A LOVELY, LOVELY SHARING. THANK YOU. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

so visual, so personal, so real, Jon Michael. Yet she remains your sanctuary still, that holy place wherein your soul and her spirit mutually replenish. Having such "influence" one with another is the mark of highest intimacy and nothing can compare to the sense of personal security and identity that brings. Beautiful last line and conclusion that is like an altar. Breathtaking work! xx

With so many tired and worn out sentiments running a muck, this was truly a breath of fresh air. To read about such a person as if gazing at a fine etched painting is more than rewarding. Thank you. I too attempted to share a different kind of mother as well in "Reality of Mothers." Not easy to escape the long arm of mediocrity, but you did it here.

I can picture her clearly. Especially the daily rituals. While my mother read, she was not a reader of great novels like yours. Yours is a uniquely different and wonderful Mother's Day poem. You have gifts of writing you have not yet realized.

yes, quite a lovely tribute, Jon ... memories do recapture the life within them ...

unfortunately, the totality of my memories are prenatal, so i am at a loss for the emotional and visual stimuli memories ... though i must admit, the bond is still strong and constantly replenishes her spirit with mine ,,,

how old and experienced and independent we
like to believe we are they are always
there for us...our comfort

As my mother died at an early age (58) I often wonder what she would have been like as she aged and how wonderful it would have been to have her just a little longer. Still, even though she passed on I relied on her to see me through my life and will never forget her. Your write is a wonderful tribute to mothers indeed.
