Self-respect can get out of hand… for some. Others, like me, have to keep a tight rein on the old comfort zone others might have me subscribe to.

There Are Halos and There Are Halos
Circular fixatives
come in all sizes and forms
taped crime scenes
radar scans
shot glasses
Coke-bottle glasses

this thing called circle
lives to confine
to keep in
to keep out
but eventually

like hair
whose nature is wild
all that would be confined
wears thin the time
leaving even hairspray’s circular enclosure
void of its entrapment

and

like a halo
a Mandoria
or Rhodes sun-god Helios
radiated crowns
have been all but forgotten

narcissism has invented
the self-made nimbus
the daily renewal
of coronet
of light
modern man’s communion
with self-worship

some

with a flourishing arc
affix hairspray
or create the aura with perfume

some

stay effused in a mind altering
cloud of smoke

and artists…

hell
we didn’t have to go through all the evolving
we were born with the damn curse
right?

Here, Odin, you are at your very best;
this is a top poem.

I have known many self made as you have described. I merely sit listen and watch, and have pity for those for they do not see beyond themselves.

Smiling, we all must walk our own path Odin we are not cursed it is all about learning. All about walking that path and eventually even at the last breath of some the light will come on.

I do like how you use thinning hair and hairspray, after all you can't cover up what soon will be presented to others for long.

Wonderful write to provoke thoughts in many

A neat insight deftly imbued with intelligent symbolism and unique images. Indeed, it becomes onerous (at times) for the artistically minded. Especially in a world plethoric with cynical fearful egocentric wannabes.
"narcissism has invented
the self-made nimbus"
Haha... Indeed! A fine palpable image. Nimbus as a radiant light drawn around the head, as in the depictions of saints and some writers I've encountered. The fecundity of your poetic gift is a delight, Odin. Peace and continued inspiration ... richard

LOL! Love that self-knocking humour in those final lines, Odin. Hell yeah! As artists we take ourselves FAR too seriously and we could definitely do with getting over ourselves. Who really gives a damn anyway? In the grand scheme of things our self-importance counts for nothing - not even to ourselves, let alone anyone else. Just get on and live shoulder to shoulder with the next person. Ten-to-one their story is far more interesting than ours anyway. Perhaps we Brits are naturally self-knocking but the minute anyone assumes a halo, then they're putting themselves up for a challenge. The only valuable ones are the ones we can't see but which others do - and they do us more of a favour by not telling us of them, quite frankly. How I love this expose, Odin. One of my very favourite of yours and I love your perceptions and insight. The best thing we can do with a halo is to play frisbee with it so at least others get to join in the game... :)) xx

You have covered the bases of narcissism very well. While I, the naturally beautiful, do not have to tattoo my eyelids and hairspray my libido with Viagra in order to feel that I am with the gods. All I have to do is write to reveal my essence, and it's not a curse, it's release of all my cares.

Why am I thinking Donald Trump?

I, for one, get almost nauseated with the self-love and the near hysteria of promoting halos to undeserving people and calling them heroes. Heroes used to mean something special, now it is merely a word.

Odin,
born with it or infused with it, we can not change the truth of it.
