Cascades (Book) - 4/13/2008 5:57:05 PM
Indeed poetry is a window to the soul and Cascades is no exception
I found myself intimately immersed within these poems, feeling what excits you, frightens you, and humbles you. You vividly describe experiences of mind and heart with verses spread over a lifetime, and this reader found herself with mental pictures and heart felt phrases lingering long past the reading of the page. There are many personal gems within this collection, I enjoyed the air of “Jazz Singer”, the earth of “An Ode to Soil”, and the sentiment of “Memories in a Shoebox”. Your collection completes with several epic selections, my favorite is “Waterfall by Candlelight”.

Through Smoked Glass (Book) - 5/15/2005 7:15:03 PM
One who wants to understand the young men who must fight wars, owes himself a good reading of this volume. Its pages take the reader into almost every phase of the consistently misunderstood world of war, and the men and women who fight them. Get it and weep... and laugh... and love every word of it. Through Smoked Glass (Book) - 1/26/2004 2:00:38 PM
This is a wonderful example of what a classic poetry book
should be. It belongs on the shelf of every soldier, housewife,
sweetheart, poet, author, libary....you get the picture.
I highly recommend it for some really thought-provoking and
soul-stirring reading.
Through Smoked Glass (Book) - 8/26/2003 2:10:11 PM
i have had the pleasure of reading this book. i am a child of the war era but had no clue how the war really affected the men fighting. all my information came from the news and from the conversations of men who were half loaded at the local VFW.
EW Richardson gave me a glimpse of what went thru the minds of the boys who went over and came back men. reading his work made me very glad to be a girl in those days.
his other poetry in this book makes me dream of small town america at a time when things were still rather innocent.
i can not chose one poem in Through Smoked Glass as a favorite. i was ushered from one emotion to another and felt guilty about intruding on some rather painful, bittersweet memories. the bottom line is: if you can only add one book to your collection right now add this one.
Through Smoked Glass (Book) - 6/25/2003 9:30:42 AM

Through Smoked Glass (Book) - 6/16/2003 12:31:13 AM
I wish to thank you, for taking a moment of your precious time to read and comment on my poem, "Moon Beams", I too am a Marine veteran
Of the Nam era, though I was blessed by reasons unknown, I saw no combat, the war escalated, after I was discharged in June Of 1964.
Through Smoked Glass (Book) - 6/5/2003 1:49:50 PM
My father is a Vietnam Veteran and much of this collection rings true. It has given me a greater appreciation of what veterans have experienced. This collection is more than a tale of a warrior, it is a tale of a life.
Through Smoked Glass (Book) - 6/3/2003 5:29:26 PM
hmmm...hubby is a Viet Nam vet...maybe I'll order it..
Through Smoked Glass (Book) - 5/31/2003 4:02:22 PM
This book was recommended to me several months ago. It all honesty, I just got around to ordering it and I am sorry that I waited so long. It is certainly more than a collection of war poetry. It is a vivid glimpse into the life and times of compassionate man. I was notably impressed by his evocative phrasing and imagery.
I highly recommend this work to any and all.
An Old Marine Speaks His Piece (Short Story) - 3/5/2008 10:39:56 PM
I'm pissed. Oops, can I say that here? Tough. I just did. Ok, ok, I'm enraged. Sound better? Ah, it means the same damn thing.
I have trouble understanding how a soldier like Ty Ziegel can have life-altering burns on his face and the VA says he's "80% disfigured"?!? What the bleep? Somehow, I suspect if their son/husband/wife/whatever were to be disfigured the way Ty is, they'd feel differently. And how in the hell can the VA (read: the government) give 60% for an amputation of a limb? For God's sake, it doesn't matter whether the soldier lost part of his/her limb or all of his limb, the limb is not the same! JC!
("Ziegel finally received a letter from the VA that rated his injuries: 80 percent for facial disfigurement, 60 percent for left arm amputation, a mere 10 percent for head trauma and nothing for his left lobe brain injury, right eye blindness and jaw fracture.")
("Within 48 hours of telling his story to CNN this summer, the Office of then-VA Secretary Jim Nicholson acted on Ziegel's case. The VA changed his head trauma injury, once rated at 10 percent, to traumatic brain injury rated at 100 percent, substantially increasing his monthly disability check.")
And how can Garrett Anderson's injuries (loss of a limb) NOT be service connected when his truck was hit by a roadside bomb? WTF? (Oops. Can ya tell I'm pissed? Good. Now let's get a few [thousand/hundred thousand] more people pissed off.
How sad it is that our soldiers have to fight the government when they get home from fighting elsewhere. Yeah, the squeaky wheel gets the grease (above), but they shouldn't have to beg for services. Omg, I could go on for days...
This isn't news to me, as I've been following this and many other stories like it, (my boyfriend is a retired Major from the Army so I tend to pay a bit more attention to military stuff than some, I suppose) but I get wound up every time I read yet another story like these.
Keep shouting, Erny. I will too.
Best,
Tami

An Old Marine Speaks His Piece (Short Story) - 11/17/2007 2:37:28 AM
The politicians involved us in Nam giving preconditions on how to fight the war to the military.
Soldiers with a hand tied on their backs can't be effective.
Then, they done AGAIN, this time with selective targeting, to avoid collateral damage and have the people around to love us for doing it.
When civilians of any denomination are going to learn that you don't declare war and go around pussyfooting?
Iraq almost 4000 US body bags are telling them why.

An Old Marine Speaks His Piece (Short Story) - 11/16/2007 1:08:36 PM
I watched a news report last night actually about a study done concerning military personel and what shocked me more than the figures revealed was the statement by the head of VA affairs. I was not impressed and was left with a very sour taste in my mouth. Your article speaks volumes and I know there will be some that do not agree with your view of this 'war' we are in. That to me is of less importance than the truth of how our troops are treated when they return. Well written, my friend.
Always,
M
An Old Marine Speaks His Piece (Short Story) - 11/16/2007 10:58:55 AM
Erny,
You pen a powerful argument for change: we owe our Veterans nothing less than to keep the promises made. As Karen said below, I've been fighting the system for 24 years: the VA makes me sick. :( Well done. I am saving this one and will be passing it on to others.
(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
Thank you again for YOUR service: welcome home, soldier, welcome home. Semper FI!
An Old Marine Speaks His Piece (Short Story) - 11/16/2007 10:31:16 AM
Powerful read; it's a travesty how the US is treating its veterans! Animals get better treatment than our brave men and women who gave their all (some with their very lives) to defend our country. Sad! The veterans deserve nothing but the BEST from our government!! Instead, they are given shoddy care or are treated like second-class citizens! My twin sister has been fighting with the VA for 24 years, trying to get the relief from the constant pain she's in. All they give her is Tylenol or Motrin; that's all she's been given for 24 years. She wants something stronger; they tell her go see the psychiarist because all they think she's after is drugs. Or they tell her she has an anger problem. Yeah, she's angry: the VA keeps pissing her off! Sad!
(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Lady RedBird. :( >tears! <
This needs to be shouted from the rooftops: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! NO MORE!!!!

I read your review and part of me wonders of whom you are speaking as it surely cannot be me..) But I know how honest you are and that you are most sincere in your praise and support of my writing. Compiling this first collection was a wonderful learning experience for me and if words found within bring comfort, joy, laughter... then it has all been worth it. Thank you my friend for your very kind words!
As always,

I must echo everything E.W. has said in his review! Reading this book is like taking a walk along the paths Bill has traveled both in reality and in the his imagination. It is rich in 'Georgian' charm and nostaglic even as it is hammered in the voice of 'today'. Truly a book will worth the read..and well deserving of the description as a treasure as is its author.
