Islamic Terrorism's Future. (Article) - 11/16/2008 5:39:14 AM
This indeed is a very intelligent and well-researched analysis. (I'm a little uncertain though whether it is a very fortunate choice to include Bosnia with view to violence in an Islamic frame. I know what you are referring to, however, namely the Saudi and Wahhabi involvement in the defence strategies of Bosnian Muslims when confronted with ethnic cleansing and their attempts to bring the emerging nation state in line with certain concepts.) Terrorism, deplorably, is a universal movement and one of the main features of our era, regardless of the frame -Islamic, Aum Shinrikyo, Jewish, Christian, state-ideological or otherwise- within which it occures or rather in which it is clad. It is a reaction to a situation where monopolies, and particularly monopolies of power, seem to become overwhelming to the effect that the individual sees his or her freedoms, rights and means of livelihood crushed. Albert Schweitzer said as early as in the sixties or sventies (?) of the 20th century that "man has become superhuman man". The dimensions which globalised industrial production assumes and the price to be paid for maintaining the swiftness of its create the danger of increasingly isolating human civilisation from the given peculiarities of the human condition. Alienation pushed to such a level does then not fail to create a discrepancy, an inner antagonism, that gives rise to pathological reactions of a very high scale, which affect and permeat every aspect of that civilisation from the relationships within the family to the very foundations of the state. Among these are fascist, fundamentalist and militarist movements, the effect -and operative basis of which- is a medievalisation of thinking such as we should be alarmed to observe in our day. This frame of mind and ideology, however, is a mere trick of the subconscious, a smokescreen intended to veil the true character of modern-day realities and the that of the contradictions and antagonism emerging from them.
