Mom, Don't Make Me Go (Short Story) - 7/8/2009 5:26:40 AM
Takes a moment. Takes a moment of looking away, of being distracted of doing something one shouldn't and life can change forever for the one and others in his or her way. Simply written but very strong write, Karla

A Survivor's Story: Necrotizing Fasciitis (Short Story) - 6/28/2009 4:46:05 AM
The intelligence, the intellect, the research, along with the writing talent to put an informative write such as this onto our screens and into our minds.
very well done, Karla.

The Others (Short Story) - 6/12/2009 8:09:06 PM
Carla, from my viewpoint, you most certainly have obtained the very enviable position of being "one of the others". As of today, (6/12/09) I have been an AD member for one year and from the start, that is what I aspired to be: "one of the others".
Oh, yeah! By the way, that is one teriffic picture of you.
Mark.
A Survivor's Story: Brown Recluse Envenomation (Short Story) - 6/11/2009 12:06:09 PM
Hi Karla,
Well you had me going there for a while. I thought this actually happened and I was just about to tell you how sorry I was, until I looked above and read it was fiction. I was wondering why you weren't more upset than what your story showed.
Oh, I never knew the word 'that' or the word 'fast' could make whole sentences. Guess maybe you wanted to show emotion. I would probably have placed commas after those words instead of periods. Whatever, it's your story! I shouldn't be telling you how to write it.
Pat
A Survivor's Story: Necrotizing Fasciitis (Short Story) - 6/10/2009 9:02:55 AM
this is truly an eye opening short story. I'm so glad that I read it as my 87 year old mother is always always always out puttering around in the yard. Bless you, Kathy
Mom, Don't Make Me Go (Short Story) - 6/7/2009 5:00:06 AM
Poignant write, Karla. You captured the essence of shame and bitter remorse in this write.
The Others (Short Story) - 3/22/2009 5:48:56 PM
We all have much to offer and are unique.
I also agree with many below reviewers
most importantly as one may write what the Lord
puts in their hearts to write on.
All the best,
Gwendolyn

A Survivor's Story: Necrotizing Fasciitis (Short Story) - 2/21/2009 11:33:21 AM
This is a traumatizing condition for not just the victim but the family and loved ones as well. I have seen stories of this on TV before, and it always seems to have horror associates with it.
I am not an MD, so therefore my opinions are irrelevant without medical research to back them up. Nevertheless, I have an invention planned to cure cancer, which also has potential uses in curing the underlying cause of this necrotizing fasciitis disease and others as well. As usual, because I don't have the credentials, or the money and backing to do the research and development, this potentially life saving invention has never been built.
Read my bio on the Den for more of this type of thinking. The theory on which this cure depends, is based on sound physics that can be implemented with only an application and refinement of currently available technologies, and the actual laboratory analysis to test and fine-tune the proto-type apparatus. Millions and millions go to cure breast cancer and other maladies, which is great, but this undeveloped invention has the potential to cure that and many other things, yet no one takes me seriously, and has approached me in a business like, confidential fashion.

MRI, A Hospital Horror Tale (Conclusion) (Short Story) - 2/21/2009 10:02:21 AM
Pretty good. The comic voice of the main character moves this story along well. The foreshadowing was also handled well. The story kept me guessing but never sure what was going to happen. Good job.
A Survivor's Story: Brown Recluse Envenomation (Short Story) - 2/18/2009 9:45:49 AM
We have black widow spiders in Georgia. They also like dark, dry places. I remember an incident where fortunately we saw them before they could do any damage to us. A can of Black Flag and a feather duster took care of the whole kit-and-caboodle, which had nested inside of a spare traffic signal cabinet, stored in a warehouse location for the State of Georgia, outside under an interstate bridge where it never got any rain. Pigeons, rats and homeless wino's named Animal also enjoyed the shelter of the bridge. In fact they built the interstate right over the old road and even left standing the building we renovated there, after the right-of-way was purchased and eventually put to greater use by us.

A Survivor's Story: Necrotizing Fasciitis (Short Story) - 2/17/2009 6:42:10 PM
My sister is currently in ICU just out of her second surgery for Necrotizing Fasciitis. Kelly (my siter) was admitted to the hospital Friday Feb. 13th to have exploratory surgery (doctors could not tell from X-rays what was causing her to be ill from time to time) during surgery they discovered she had a growth of cists that the had to remove. Somehow they punchered her intestions and she spent the next three days screaming in pain and yet no one tried to find out what went wrong. By this past Sunday Kelly and I noticed what liked like a purple pimple on her stomach and we brought this to the attention of the on staff doctor. Finally on Monday she was taken for an MRI and thats when it was discovered she had Necrotizing Fasciitis. I'm only 27 (Kelly is 30) and never having heard of this sort of thing and because the on staff doctor only told they where going to remove my sister's skin. I started doing my own research and was shocked how serious this condition really is. We have no other family in town with us so needless to say any information I have gathered has scared me until I happened across your story. It has given me hope that my sister will pull through this even though she has a couple of more surgery's ahead and then ahe will have to begin skin graphs. Thank You for sharing ... Your words have brought comfort.

Karen Lynn's Story: Johnny's Jottings: Crawfish Festival, 2008 (Short Story) - 1/20/2009 4:49:12 PM
Was wondering where you went, Karen. My life membership mean they can't cut me off. Have been trying to take a swing, spring or fall, through cajan country through Galveston and Bolivar, and then north to Shreveport and home.
Guess we should avoid the festival tho it sure sounds like fun. Those days of dropping in are gone when I need a special hotel room to stop driving. Thanks for reminding me when I could and did.

The Others (Short Story) - 1/13/2009 9:51:57 AM
I think we all want to recognized and have our writings read. That is one reason many are on the den. Stats are important, but I think that the ones who take time to read what some one has so carefully created, are the real winners. Some don't have a large following , but the ones who take the time to read anothers work and leave a comment are the true champions on the den....M

Karen Lynn's Story: Johnny's Jottings: Crawfish Festival, 2008 (Short Story) - 12/28/2008 6:32:58 PM
This is charming and humorous. I once went to a crawfish party an oilfield company in the Southwest gave. I did a lifestyle cooking page on crawfish cooking. I tried some crawfish too and this white Wisconsin girl BURNED her mouth off. Delightful read.
The Others (Short Story) - 12/28/2008 6:31:09 PM
I don't keep score with who tracks me and posts replies to my work, and you shouldn't either. It is discouraging to not be the popular one, but it doesn't bother me not to be on the New York Times Best Seller List. I have a small following, and I am content. I often feel I take for granted what I have is a gift and it's meant to be shared -- even if it be with just few. I applaud you! Write on, sister!
The Others (Short Story) - 12/14/2008 8:44:26 PM

The Others (Short Story) - 12/3/2008 7:12:12 AM
Karla you are a fine poet, your work has consistently improved each month and you are one of the finest that I look forward to reading. Never NEVER compare yourself to others. You are gifted uniquely to be who you are and to add your own special poetic voice to the world. Numbers mean nothing, writing your heart, being satisfied to express what God gives you, that means everything. You are loved, and respected.
The Others (Short Story) - 12/3/2008 6:51:32 AM
dare to be different than the others -- uniqueness, individuality is the key to personal satisfaction -- and it is, in the final analysis key, that "unto thyself, must you be true" -- high review counts stimulate the ego, but mean little if you know that you have, "meant what you said and said what you meant" -- if low review numbers kept me from struggling on, I most certainly would have stopped long ago -- but you, have more reviews than I and several of the rest of us will ever collectively amass -- write on -- peace and love to you my friend -- JMW

One Life Was Saved: MINE (Article) - 8/10/2008 1:48:07 PM
One quite morning, I was driving along the freeway when from nowhere a big truck hit my car. Obviously, I survived the tragedy but that very microsecond became a turning point in my life. Life is so fragile that it can be taken from us anytime, anywhere without even us knowing it. This accident leads me to define the true meaning of Life. It is not the material stuff - money, physical appearance, job, fame, intelligence, god - that constitute life. When you die you could not carry these earthly things in your grave, but you can carry a smile in your heart. Life is something we simply need to enjoy to its fullest.

Remember the Children (Article) - 12/13/2007 2:37:58 PM
I agree with you, I don't understand how someone can forget they've got a child, or where the child is, my sister parked by a car at a convient store and noticed two small children in the car, she waited for five minutes, the children started crying, so she went inside the store and vocalized her concerns on the children, and a lady spoke up and said she had only been in the store a minute, (why did she lie?) my sister got really upset and told her that she had watched them in there for five minutes, the lady stormed out of the door, my sister was so upset, i told my sister to get her tag number and send to DMV but she said she was too upset, when will the laws get stiff on these ppl that "forget" their children? or those that leave thier children only for "a minute"? this is such a needless tragedy and so glad you wrote something about it.
Allergy Capital of the World (Article) - 10/25/2007 4:42:14 AM

Allergy Capital of the World (Article) - 10/24/2007 8:10:22 PM
I simply had to read this one. I'm allergic too, especially to cats. Now, you think you can avoid cats, but it's not so easy. I have to avoid people who have cats and sometimes I'm invited somewhere and I forget to ask. My symptoms also include asthma. It happened when I had to work at a colleague's, at a friend's marriage and at another friend's birthday where one of his nieces brought her two cats... house dust is another killer. Anyway, enough complained. I hope they'll find something that doesn't make you sleepy!
Greetings,
Axilea
Fibromyalgia--IT Ruins Everything!! (Article) - 10/18/2007 4:34:31 PM
I know exactly what you are talking about. I have had fibromyalgia since I was a child. I couldn't tell anyone, I didn't even know what to say!
I was a very active child, played the piano, danced... but some days I felt like I was going to die. Instead, I was told I was lazy!
I'm feeling much better now and there are a lot of things that seem to work for me. Going to the seaside, warm weather rather than rain and cold. Diet when I'm in pain, pilates, yoga and swimming make me feel much better. Also, I have learned breathing and relaxation techniques that help when I'm in pain... And I have found a partner who knows and understands. He even admires me for coping with the condition.
There is hope for all of us. We can beat it or at least don't let it have a huge impact on our lives.
Thank you for this great article. We need to speak up and let everyone know that chronic and (almost) invisible conditions are not "all in one's head"!
Axilea

Sound like a fun day for you and your sister. Fantastic story. Enjoyed.
Fibromyalgia--IT Ruins Everything!! (Article) - 9/14/2007 1:59:27 AM
You got that right, IT ruins everything alrighty....If you havent got a partner you hard pressed in this world of fickle emotions to find one, and if you have one, you're hard pressed to invoke any kind of endearment, because you are in the "Too hard basket" which leaves one feeling so worthless a great deal of the time.
I might have a partner but I tell you, half the time that is in name only....and most Aussies are obsessed with Skinny Poles ( Women) not the ones with a bit of flesh covering their bones, so that kinda puts me in the YUK basket here. Try exercising to lose weight with this thing, YEAH RIGHT...I do it, till I'm blue in the face, wracked with major pain, for a couple of measly Kilos, or pounds in your measures, and still no lovin!!!!!!
At the moment, I am so Ticked...I'm on the lookout for a bloke who is big and solid, and likes flesh haha.
How bout you dear one, any like that around, with kind hearts??
A dying breed yes, as the Hollywood Mags have polluted Mens minds...ahhhhhhhhhh I better Shaddup.
Love yah heaps Kiddo, am with you all the way.
Love Ch'erie

LOL funny! Oh, I miss those silly carnivals. One was recently in the neighborhood, I was so tempted... Could just see this frumpy middle aged woman whoopin' and a hollerin'.... Can't get hubby to join me, he says what's the point? (He flew F-18's for a career "been upside down before, thank you very much.") Can't wait to take the Grandsons to Great America.
No Ordinary Blizzard (Article) - 8/30/2007 12:36:57 PM
I was a junior in HS living in Elida (Lima). I, too, remember the snow going sideways, walking up drifts to rooftops and shoveling. I didn't get paid, but my dad insisted I keep ahead of the storm, too. That didn't happen. I remember lots of grilled cheese & tomato soup. Now I'm living in the Coachella Valley of Southern California. The temp today is 115 degrees. (still better than snow)
