This is the second in the Kim Bennett Thriller Series - It is an excellent read that will have you turning the pages as fast as you can read them - Kim Bennett, whom we met in Into the Basement, is a Dominatrix in San Francisco, and is in Tampa Florida for a lecture. She boards a flight back to San Francisco, only to be taken off the flight - It turns out the young lady who handled the lecture and drove Kim to the airport was found brutally murdered.
Seems there have been murders in that area that seem to echo the 'Son of Sam' murders...There is a hypnotist, Titus, one sick puppy, that is in communication with the spirit of Madam Blavatsky - In case you haven't heard of her, she was one of the most famous psychic/mediums of her time - she wasn't into the dark stuff - she was and still is a great source of the occult.
Titus hypnotizes folks and they do whatever he want of them and with them -and that means EVERYTHING - from sex to murder.
Kim and Special Agent Hague try to stop Titus and his evil - Kim Bennett is a strong character - a very different heroine - but you find yourself rooting for her and liking her.
There is a different take on vampires and vamp wannabees in this book. They will continue to factor in the next of the series, Into the Haven...Spell is a scary, taut book that will give the readers their share of chills and a new lady to root for -
Mr. Applegate is a poised author with innovative ideas to entertain and scare his readers -

Into the Basement is Norm Applegate's debut thriller novel that packs a big punch - He writes like a seasoned author - inventive and smooth - This is the first in a series featuring one unique lady - a San Franciso Dominatrix Kim Bennett - not you run of the mill ordinary female lead! She is recruited into a missing persons case because it seems all the women who disappeared seem to be 'in the business' - Kim can investigate in places the conventional police can't - she is part of the adult scene, so she looks at home looking around X-rated establishments -
A very sick guy, Wong Lee, employs a Russian thug to kidnap girls that meet Lee's specifications, to be taken to Lee's very kinky chamber of horrors that is located in his basement (hence the title).. Lee has been doing some sleezy things in his career - he has been into human trafficking, drugs, now the 'film industry' that specializes in torture and snuff films. No recurring roles there...
Kim Bennett faces the challenge of being taken into a world where pain is the norm - and that works in her favor...
This is a very adult thriller with an edge - There are graphic sex and domination scenes with varying partners - and graphic torture scenes, but necessary in the scope of the book's plot - You really like Kim - she is strong and has integrity and purpose to find who is talking the girls and to take him to justice.
This is your next generation thriller - erotic, explosive, adult with surprising twists and turns - and above all, scary.
The next outing for Mr. Applegate is Into the Spell -
