The Pict (Hardcover) (Book) - 12/10/2007 5:10:52 PM
Underneath an appropriately elegant cover showing a map etched into a foggy sky over the Scottish Highlands, the barbarous Picts plan their sneak attack against the tremendous might of the Roman army. First-time novelist Jack Dixon has released a short, but heavily researched, tale of an ancient culture from 84 A.D. The Pict tribes banded together to defeat the massive Roman invasion of their homeland in northern Scotland. Very little is actually known about this period of Pict history, but the author has brought the available facts together into a coherent story, much of which is fictional by default. The storyline surrounds the life and adventures of Calach, a charismatic member of one of the tribes who becomes the reluctant leader chosen to defend the homeland from the invading Romans. Jack Dixon has adequately described a fascinating society for modern readers of historical fiction. The main thing he could have done to improve The Pict would have been to triple the book’s length, including much more description and detail. Fans of The Picts and other ancient cultures will most certainly enjoy this book.

The Pictish Side of the Story (Article) - 11/13/2007 8:00:34 AM
Jack, I get the feeling that you yourself are decendent of the Picts, as your indominable spirit, perseverence in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, and appreciation of life are all quite similar. No wonder you had the heart to write this. I am sure it will be a best selling book. All my best, Julie
