Wow, I loved this piece. As serious as it was, I found humorous spots and could identify with it. I'll be sixty-three soon. Our family eats healthy, sort of--the others cheat more than me but I have my moments. When I was thirty-five, I didn't care for the way I looked and my health that was falling apart fast (I drank a lot too--suffer from PTSD) so I went from a meat eating, junk food, booze hound, soda jerk to a vegan diet with no booze within a year under the guidance of a life long vegan. At the time I weighted 215. In a matter of months I plunged down to 165 and started to turn green with tinges of orange. My weight came back up and hovers between 180 and 190 now. I'm 6 feet four tall. I'm still a vegan and my cheating is from healthy junk food through Trader Joes and Whole Foods. Since my wife and I live near San Francisco, we are fortunate because of the number of vegan restaurants. I'm tougher on maintaining the vegan diet but my wife is tougher on the exercise. She exercises about three times what I do and yes, she talks about Madonna and wanting to keep that look. My wife lectures a few times a year and has one coming up in September at the University of Mississippi (I think near St. Louis). Her topic is inspirational and links to her novels. Her first book was a memoir, Red Azalea. All of her books and my first book are on China.

I really like the review process at the end of the week and asking, “What worked…and what didn’t?” Then asking for support - which is not a guy thing - but the most important is asking the boss upstairs for spiritual wisdom.

Hi Eli first and foremost you are an inspiration. i like your article is putting others forst making you fat. I am a people pleaser, and have had wieght problems most of my life. 17 years ago i found a program that saved my life a 12 step program for eating disorders. i have seen so many miracles at the meetings.
