Kueidu'ifr gone a viking (Short Story) - 5/24/2013 11:40:03 AM
I read it once and thought it's an amazingly true picture of the way it was with my ancestors. I will read it again to my grandchildren. They are going to love it!

Kueidu'ifr gone a viking (Short Story) - 5/24/2013 5:25:27 AM
What a wonderful story, enjoyed reading every word of it. Somebody is very knowledgeable about the Vikings way of life. They were a rather brutal lot but amazingly the same thing is still done today only using lightly different means. Mankind will never learn…

lol Yes, long. But very nicely written.
Kueidu'ifr gone a viking (Short Story) - 5/24/2013 5:04:13 AM
Whew! You are long-winded, Budd, but the story kept my interest from the first sentence to thank goodness to the last. This is quite a departure from the Native American ( still say Indian) stories you have been pursuing. I enjoyed it. It was written well.
Pax Quater (Short Story) - 5/17/2013 5:20:11 PM
~Budd~ Rumbles, fires and ash spewing scenes.
Loving this account of Selina giving birth. A daughter
named Pompia..the second daughter. The faith to the
Roman gods and the destruction of Pompeii following in
your story of families. Stunning piece. I've some
catching up to do!!

Pax Quater (Short Story) - 5/13/2013 7:02:52 AM
This story kept me on the edge all the way through!
Knowing somewhat about the history I was well aware
what would happen, but not to all the inhabitants and
was REALLY worried about Breul and Selina! I am thankful
they were not in the crossfire of ash! :)
Excellent story covering history and mind thoughts back then...
I hope it continues onward I want to read more!!!!

Pax Quater (Short Story) - 5/13/2013 6:12:10 AM
This story grows more exciting and interesting as we see what is going on in that time, people's beliefs, and how people dealt with disaster......much as we do today. I'm so happy that Selina had another girl!!!

PAX (Short Story) - 4/26/2013 5:32:28 AM
I enjoyed this first story and am looking forward to the continuing saga. Personally, I believe this should be turned into a novel. A few grammarical errors, typos etc. but a great beginning to what hopefully will be a published book some day!

Pax Peracto (Short Story) - 2/6/2013 3:37:33 PM
Stopped by to let you know I have read your Pax series from the start. I am much impressed with your knowledge of their culture. Each part projects life as it is..Everyday occupations, families and projects of one sort or another not to mention the close relationships..You have a tender heart and it shows. You are a brilliant writer and accolades are in order for this series...Short stories are as hard to project( reader image) as long ones..You have captured the picture well....
God bless

Pax Peracto (Short Story) - 2/6/2013 9:38:56 AM
I have not read the other stories in this sequence, but I sense that they are chapters in a book that you are writing. First, let me commend you on your research into Roman life. You seem to have a rich knowledge of ordinary Roman living. Unfortunately, the tale that you are telling is so pedestrian and unexciting that the reader may turn away.
As I've been told, the use of more conversation (exciting conversation) and action (emotion) could make the story more exciting. Perhaps, if you read Quo Vadis, the only Roman story I have ever read, you will get a feel for action and emotion.
I don't think that Roman life was as contended as you write. Construction projects required great numbers of slaves and slaves were considered to be expendable and treated quite badly at times. I have been watching reality shows. While most people think they are quite contrived, I note that in almost every case when a group of skilled people get together to try to accomplish something quite difficult there's much disagreement and disharmony while it's happening. Your story shows none of that.
Finally, the story needs some editing for typos and misspellings. The most notable thing to me was the use of capitalization for common food items that should not be capitalized because they are not proper names.
Sorry to be so disheartening, but I believe a writer is better off and can improve if they get the truth rather than empty praise. I have learned from all the constructive criticism I have received and not gained much from empty praise. I can imagine that the story will get much more exciting when Vesuvius erupts.

Alas, tears calm the heart but do not mend reality. While reading your poem, I felt your sorrow. I hope it's just poetry and not reality. A parent's heart is more sensitive than we think. Love to you and your family, your friend, who can see you through your words. May God give you peace, calm and strength to write. Love, Emile

Sorrow's Salt (Poetry) - 4/16/2013 8:50:25 PM
Not quite sure what is meant - I took you wrote about water affected by salt. Such a tragedy in Boston. What sort of people do these terrible things.

This affects me like a silent howl, Budd. This could be a parchment letter thumb-tacked to a jillion happenings on Earth right now. You write of the Beast as greatly as you write of the Beauty. Keep writing. Thank you. ~~ Diana
Sorrow's Salt (Poetry) - 4/16/2013 2:02:28 PM
Tragedy always brings these saline crystals to us...
It helps us get through...
Well and beautifully written about tragedy and I
agree with Ron, it's timed almost intuitively to the
recent tragedy in Boston...

Sorrow's Salt (Poetry) - 4/16/2013 11:15:56 AM
You have written about the tragedy in Boston without writing about it. I don't feel the same pain because I have no one close to the tragedy. The media's hustle and bustle and overblowing the result of some maniacal plot to kill people, has put people into the mood of feeling the devastation without feeling it. Believe me, yesterday many died around the world much more tragic circumstances that we never heard of.
Ron
Sorrow's Salt (Poetry) - 4/16/2013 10:57:26 AM
One thing for sure dear Budd, crying will never cease, but joy comes to those who hope! My hope is you have peace and assurance, that this too shall pass....
These tears are liquid crystals of light, if only known from whence they come, bring healing to our souls...a medicine that cannot be reproduced in true form by man.
Moved and touched..

Ah, Budd, 'tis the season for sorrow, yes, yes there is, just as there is a season for happiness, may the happiness season find you quickly.
Sorrow's Salt (Poetry) - 4/15/2013 11:04:03 PM
Heart rending sorrow, a torn heart and eyes that seemingly flow over in an endless stream of salt tears.
May this writing be the start of this hearts mending,
May there be an arm to comfort this broken heart
And a tender hand to dry these tears.
Deeply touching Budd

Chopping wood metaphor in your poem, Budd,
is a wonderful mind throwback time to experience
heartfelt words of life.....in passing.
Cometh the Axe (Poetry) - 4/14/2013 1:14:42 PM
Writing it 3rd person seems to have eluded some readers. 1st person would have made schmaltzy confessional clap trap. Choosing the mode of narrative correctly is always the key to making a poem constructively usable for the reader, the chance to look away a ponder, then back to the narrative purpose of the poem. This is, of course, the opposite of a writer needing sympathy, empathy et al., . choosing to create a vehicle as nothing more than a means to somehow give access to the poet's personal life (which, quite frankly, all art should be about the work, not the artist)The 1st person position in poetry always says think on "me" not the outreach of the words. Well done, Budd.
Cometh the Axe (Poetry) - 4/14/2013 7:54:48 AM
Thoughts like that are dangerous and can tie you down. Give every impression that there are ghosts in the closet that are afraid to come out.

like a boomerang later in life when... "he sits here gazing alone",

Waiting for Love (Poetry) - 4/10/2013 6:45:49 AM
Wonderful insight into the human condition, regardless of our circumstances.
I recall my initiation into the Order of the Arrow. After bread and water for two days and spending the night alone in the woods with only a blanket, I recited what I heard and saw to the elders. As they slapped me on the shoulder three times, they proclaim my name as “ Scared Rabbit.” Apparently they had either run out of names or had misjudged my vivid description of chipmunks scurrying about in the night. I was always fearless and very comfortable in wilderness situations. Alas, I never found a maiden that shared my love of the wilderness.

What a beautifully written poem...
A muse can bring such inspiration as some of my
muses do as well... To be inspired to write so
magnificently is a talent only a few are able to
put down in such descriptive words...
Breathtaking...

What a lovely setting - be it dream, fantasy, or real.
Lover's Stars (Poetry) - 4/4/2013 2:19:50 AM
Brilliant poem, Budd.
Love the "blinking suns....reflected in the River",
enjoyed very much the time with birds songs and..."aromatic
Bachelor Buttons"...., which I know as a cornflower growing
in corn crop fields (wheat, barley),..sage (anti-aging herb),
...much pressure for romantically challenged, with a Chickasaw
County Cupid's arrows set loose upon......love starved...
that happened to be gazing up, reaching to the stars,...
and those... really got me landing on cloud nine.
Thank you for sharing. Isabella.

My Okie Friend (Poetry) - 4/3/2013 4:00:19 PM
This reminds me as well of all the solo hikes, climbs and wanderings among ice caves, glaciers (with super caution) and peaks...those places where the companionship of a like wanderer would have been appreciated, where, as you say, there would be no need for goodbyes, what might the experience have offered in addition to the wonders of self-realization that I did indeed experience? What might that have been like? You've succeeded in arousing my frustrations (never any regrets) when I tackled the Appalachian 400 club challenge that climbed the New England peaks of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Mass. (often alone, but some with my wife at the time) and saw as your poem suggests, a void where an "okie friend" (or in my case, an organic climber, many of which I knew) would have enhanced the experience. Thank you the reminder of experiences I wish I had been privileged to partake in. (I did make up for the somewhat frustrated solo work in New England, however, when I moved back to the west coast and took on the Cascades and especially my habitual trek to Mt. McKinley, west, east, and south walls. Wow...what a period of experiencing nature's threat and reward.)
My Okie Friend (Poetry) - 4/3/2013 3:38:44 AM
I hear you Budd--I too have memories that I can recall and cherish in my heart-well done--I often wish I could have my old friends back with me once more---DK

Romeo's play of words spoken, stir hearts around the world to this want and need of moon beams and ebony nights. Grace being the incense of the one who knows these words and is moved to dance with Romeo and his moon beam into those ebony nights!
Lightning struck ...purified this mind!

I feel the swinging bridge crossed by feet long ago...Kiamichi mountains for me... The peace felt could not be bought these days and times and starry skies are seldom looked at from blankets where heads rest...who knows, maybe the indian cupid will shoot his arrowhead and it land where no more goodbyes will have to be said...
Truly touched Budd...

foundering (Poetry) - 3/30/2013 4:08:29 PM
Budd,
A 'breathtaking' tale, no pun intended.:) I am thankful that you survived. I've always felt drowning would be terrible, to not be able to breathe. I am very claustrophobic and get the 'feeling' I can't breathe if I'm in tight or crowded places. I cannot imagine what you went through. You have an angel watching over you.
Many blessings,
Linda+

Happened several times to me and your thoughts were not far from mine.
foundering (Poetry) - 3/28/2013 8:48:25 AM
An interesting work with the mind alternating both a conscious interpretation and one of enigmatic value, i.e., projecting these words into our daily thoughts of what death might be like. Then, taking the literal value of the piece, one is struck with the confirmation that ONLY life as we know it dies, relenting to the infinite nature of matter, be the remains of flesh and bone, or ash. Matter knows not the cessation of existence. That's what it is...what it will always be. Provocative and insightful.
foundering (Poetry) - 3/28/2013 7:47:06 AM
Frightening...well done, Budd...you leave the reader gasping for air..
Anna
foundering (Poetry) - 3/28/2013 7:27:17 AM
An intense portrayal of what drowning must be like. From your note, I assume it must be first-hand experience.
While I found myself flailing trying to swim at seven, I first visited the city swimming pool where for ten cents one could put your feet solidly on the bottom of the 2 foot end of the pool, see in the chlorine stinging clear water, and find that underwater was more pleasant than trying to struggle at the surface at something called “swimming.” Rivers and lakes came later when I had already learned the basics and never had to “put my foot down on murky bottom” to make it to shore.

foundering (Poetry) - 3/27/2013 5:48:51 PM
When I was that age you speak of I used to surf and body surf in the ocean where I lived for the most part of my life...used to get caught in the occasional rip tide, like that of what Jerry speaks of, but as kids that lived at the beach, we knew how to handle rip tides...but when we got dumped off our surfboard by the power of a wave and got bounced off the bottom or ocean floor, that was when we might think we see God or "the" light, as all breath is knocked out of u and you do finally come up choking on salt water...but damned if we didn't go back out and on the same day and take the chance to have it happen all over again...THIS IS A VERY WELL WRITTEN, DESCRIPTIVE PIECE, BUDD, PERHAPS YOUR BEST SO FAR...ENJOYED READING IT...e
foundering (Poetry) - 3/27/2013 5:22:53 PM
I was a lusty twenty-something-year-old and was at Jones beach in Long Island, with Nanette, my wife and a few friends. I was into the surf, got caught up in a rip tide. I had figured I was going to die, but, like this poem said, my feel finally touched bottom and I made it to the shore. I'll never forget my close encounter with death. I had that same close encounter a number of times in years to come although of a different nature..
foundering (Poetry) - 3/27/2013 5:14:21 PM
I tried to envision how awful it must be to drown. A very descriptive poem of such a sad event. If it was you, I am so glad you lived to talk about it…

In the Shadows (Poetry) - 3/23/2013 12:10:40 AM
The youth of the past is something yet to be captured - but it will only replenish strength and in return will diminish wisdom.
It is the nature of all things that as experience grows, the vessel becomes fatigued.
Rx
In the Shadows (Poetry) - 3/22/2013 3:41:53 PM
Ah, regret!
Regret can be your worst enemy or your best friend.
You have the "Power to choose".
I've been ruminating on the duality of the.."I hunted
and then was he the prey"...and,..."wrongful decision,
escape is naught in the shadows of night"..
The proverbial table was turned; the hunter had become
the hunted, isn't new concept, and one doesn't need to go
to the war to experience it.
Regular, every days trip to workplace, interpersonal
relationship, TV news, politics, East-West (and all other
directions) issues, provide enough of battlefields exposure,
and opportunity of getting hurt.
Emotional hurt seriously alter human brain chemistry.
Brain runs on neurotransmitters. Some of them give
us energy (adrenalin), some control body movement (dopamine),
and some control mood (serotonin).
When serotonin drops (prolonged stress), our brain turns
against us, will reach into our memory, pull out every bad
memory it can find ("the worse the better"),and makes us being
tortured by our own thoughts (especially at 3 am, "in the
shadows of night").
Get the picture.
Thank you Budd for sharing a masterpiece of an outstanding
work of a creative Artist.
With warm regards Isabella.
